Sony P6-120MP 8mm Tape

Help with tape problem (by 5 users)

By Reynolds - usenet poster

Does someone here have a solution for me. I have a Sony Video HI8
Handycam Pro CCD-VX3. The tape I used was a Sony 8mm P6-120mp. Here is
the problem.
I was taping a party, during playback through a VCR, I lost part of the
picture, nothing but static or whatever you call it when you lose the
picture, but if I pause it, I can see the picture, if I fast forward I
can also see the picture, same when I rewind. But during normal play I
can't see the picture. the picture gradually went away not all at
once. I didn't use the battery I used the power supply. I don't have
the manual anymore more but during taping I got a picture on the display
window of what looked like a picture of a flat-head screw. Any ideas on
what I can do to see the video during normal play?

I have a similar problem. My Wedding Video is all Static or whatever. My uncle videotaped and then when we went to play it back it was static but some of the picture would come and go. The more we watched it the more we would lose. Someone told my uncle that it sounded like the camera had a dirty head. Does anyone know what might be wrong or if there is any way to get the video off of the tape it is one and save what is there?

Only one thing will cause the symptoms described: While in pause or stop
during recording, the tape in the camcorder mis-threaded (i.e.: did not follow
the proper path around the guides and headwheel). This can be caused by wear
and crud in the mechanism, or by simply shaking/jarring the machine just right
(wrong?) while it is stopped (and the tape is slightly loosened).

Dirty heads CANNOT CAUSE OCCASSIONAL LOSS OF PICTURE IN PART OF A TAPE.
Especially when the picture gets visible when in pause, slow, or "picture
scan". The picture in a mis-threaded segment is visible under those
circumstances because video head tracking data is genrated in a different way
than in play. If the heads are dirty enough to prevent recordingthen
NOTHING is on the tape...and it cannot magically appear while in pause.

Dirty heads (which are amazingly rare) cannot do what is described: If the
heads are dirty enough, then a properly recorded signal will not play back at
all, period, in any mode. If the heads are dirty during recording, then a
poor-quality signal will get recorded (noisy, poor color, both), or no signal
will get recorded at all. That's analog. With a digital machine, it either
works or not...no in between in any mode. Most "dirty heads" complaints have
absolutely nothing to do with the heads: Its guide post adjustment or pieces of
???? in the mechanism.

Two things usually cause this problem:
1. Dirty video heads
2. The tape misthreaded (common on camcorders through the decades) and
jumped a guide post causing only a partial wrap around the head drum.

Sounds as if you need to clean your heads. Could be the camera or the
VCR. And you may not be able to recover the picture already recorded
(with dirty heads).
