Evaporator fan running, condensor fan running, compressor not running.

HI. This will essentially be the result of a failed compressor start relay, or the compressor itself may be damaged, as well. I will lay out a procedure that will help diagnosis the situation. Please reply with the correct model number and brand for accurate part numbers, if possible.
Procedure:
THE RELAY

The compressor relay starts the compressor. A fault relay can result in the compressor failing to cycle on. The relay is accessed from the lower rear of the refrigerator. The compressor relay can be accessed by removing the terminal cover box. The cover is held on by tension or with a retaining clip. On soem units. the relat may not be covered at all.(each modle may vary). Benethe the terminal cover(if equipped), you will find the compressor relay, and the overload protector as well. The electrical terminals of the commpressor motor are loctaed here also. Remove the compressor relay by pulling it straight off from the compressor, gently. Pull the wire off of the side terminal of the relay. It is connected with a slip on connector. Firmly pull the connector, do not pull on the wire. You may need to use a pair of needle-nose pliers. Inspect the connector and terminal for corrosion. If either is corroded they should be cleaned or replaced. There are two types of relays you may encounter, wire coil and solid state. If the relay has an exposed wound wire coil it can be tested for continuity. Otherwise, the relay is of solid state design and requires specialized equipment for testing. Test the relay with a ohm(multimeter), for continuity. Set the meter to the ohms setting X1. With the relay upside down, place the probes into the terminals labeled "S" and "M"(the labeling may vary on each modle). The meter should display a reading of zero ohms, indicating continuity (or if using a continuity tester, it should light up). With the probes still in place, turn the relay over. You should hear the click of the magnetic switch engaging. The meter should now display an ohm reading of infinity (or the tester should not light up). Turn the relay upside down again, place the probe on the "S" terminal and place it on the side terminal labeled "L". The meter should now display a reading of zero ohms (continuity). Turn the relay over and the reading should change to infinity. With the relay upside down place one probe on the "L" terminal and the other probe on terminal labeled "M". The meter should display a reading of zero ohms. Turn the relay over and the reading will stay the same, zero ohms. Now, if the relay fails these described tests, it shohdl be replaced asap.

COMPRESSOR TEST PROCEDURE

The compressor is accessed from the lower rear of the refrigerator. Generally the same proxsimity of the realy. The compressor motor can be accessed by removing the terminal cover box. The cover is held on by tension or with a retaining clip. The main testing points will be the actual terminal post that hold the relay, gently pull the relay of the terminal box on the side of the compressor, and use the relay holding probes for testing. Once the relay is removed, Place one probe on any terminal and then touch the other probe to each of the other two terminals. The multimeter should display a reading of zero ohms. Be sure to set your meter to 1X before begining. Now move the first probe to a different terminal and test the other two terminals with the other probe. Finally, move the first probe to the last terminal and test each of the other terminals with the other probe. Every test should have continuity with the multitester displaying zero ohms. If the compressor motor does not pass all of these tests, the compressor will require professional service. Now test the compressor for ground. With the multimeter still set to X1, touch one probe to bare metal on the compressor housing (it may be necessary to scratch away a little paint to expose the metal). Touch the other probe to each of the three terminals in turn. None of the terminals should have continuity; the multitester should display a reading of infinity. If any of the grounding tests show continuity, the compressor will require professional service.

How to turn off air compressor on 1999 ford expedition

  • Under the hood in the relay panel will be a relay for the compressor. When you locate the relay box look on the underside of the lid for the legend (layout) of the relays. Pulling that relay will stop the compressor from turning on.
  • You can also just unhook the connector on the compressor and secure it to stop the compressor from turning on.
  • If you need the compressor clutch to not turn at all, like if the bearings are bad, then you need to buy a smaller belt to bypass the compressor all together.

  • Hope this helps and thank you for using FixYa.

I have a ge profile refrigerator there is no power going into the relay compressor. The four thermistors are good. Where or what should I check with a voltohm meter on the control board or temperature...

Hi,

You should firstly test your fridge DOOR switches with your multimeter (simply test for open/closed continuity), as these switches signal the compressor relay. Some fridges usually have a time delay after switch is activated also. If these switches test ok, then all I can suggest is changing out the control board.

It won't start no click sound if I turn the temperature control to maximum

If your hearing a clicking sound and it won't start your looking at either the relay switch for your compressor or the compressor itself. I recommand replacing the relay switch first to see if that solves your problem. Just look for the model number of your freezer, visit your local part store (reliable, amre) and ask them for the relay switch for the compressor. It should be under 20 bucks or so.

To install the part you first need to located the compressor. There should be an opening to the freezer somewhere in the bottom. Once you find the opening (after removing the cover) you should see a large cylinder metal container, this is your compressor. If the freezer unplugged located a small box attached to the compressor that looks similar to the relay you purchased from the part store. Remove the wiring for the old relay and then proceed to remove the relay (it should just be plugged in). Once it is removed place in the new relay. Plug back the fridge and see if your freezer works. If the problem persists it will be your compressor. You should have a professional have this replaced as it requires weilding and removal of the freon gas. The repair for a compressor job is $500 up.

I hope this helps and good luck. Please give positive feedback if this helps :)

My 93 plymouth voyager won't start unless I spray starting fluid down air cleaner, then it only runs a few seconds.

Listen for fuel pump when turning ignition to on position. If no pump sound, locate fuel pump fuse and relay in box under hood. First check fuse, then listen to relay while ignition is turned to on. Relay should click. If no click, replace relay. If click, circuits are good and pump is likely bad. Please reply if you have questions.

AC wont kick on....

The first thing to check is your breaker box. There should be one double breaker for the air handler unit, that's the inside unit, and one double breaker for the compressor, that's the outside unit. Check both breakers. If you're not sure if they've be thrown, click them toward the outside of the breaker box (off position) and then click them toward the inside of the breaker box (on position). If the breakers are on and you still are not getting any A/C take a look at your compressor, (outside unit). If the fan is running at least you're getting power. However, your compressor down inside the unit may not be getting power or it may need to be replaced. The compressor has a start-up cap. If this cap goes bad or the wires from this cap fry or corrode away, this will also keep the compressor from starting but the fan will still run. If the fan is not running it could be caused by a faulty relay inside the compressor cabinet. This relay is supposed to open and close based on a low voltage signal from the thermostat. I believe it's roughly 24 volts. This relay switches on and off the 240 volts for the compressor and the compressor fan. Often this relay goes bad or the wires leading up to it fry. If you?re going to work on the unit yourself make sure all power is shut off. There should be a shutoff switch on the outside wall near the compressor. I?d also shut the breakers off.

Whirlpool gold side by side refrigerator relay compressor?

turn it off for an hour or so and give the coils time to thaw just in case they somehow froze up. also if the frig was tilted in the wrong direction (which it doesnt sound like it was since it has food in it!!!) it could need time to let the refrigerant and oil settle back into the compressor.

where are you located (cold or warm climate)?
and where is the frig located (in your home)?
