Anyone else experience text darkness problems with this printer?
It's otherwise a great printer with duplexing at a fantastic price, but:
First one printed too light at other than the highest density settings.
Brother support said they weren't getting other complaints like mine. Sent
out a replacement toner/drum, but no change. I returned the printer and
received a replacement.
The replacement prints exactly the same way. I have to set HRC all the way
to "dark" (does this actually DO anything???) and density all the way from
the default "0" to "+6" in order to print text as dark as you'd expect from
other laser printers. Of course, the problem with this is I'm using up toner
much faster than I would ordinarily.
prints too light

The Brother HL-2040 machine does not have and cannot be fitted with a duplexer to print both sides of the page automatically. You can only duplex manually, that is - you turn the page over and put it back in the machine to print on the other side. Some settings will allow to print double sided manually, where the printer prints all the odd numbered pages then instructs the user to place ALL the printed stock back in the paper tray to then print all the even numbered pages.
well if it started and got worse over time it could be the drum otherwise it may be the driver that is running the printer also there normaly is a light on the front that will light up red if the drum is shot
Many people are having problems with this machine. If you are dissatisfied with the quality I would return it and try something else. Your most economical solution is going to be a factory refurbished (with warranty) HP color laserjet. Staples usually has some good deals.
If it's the same as the Brother 4070 you go into printer proerties (press properties next to printer selector after sending a document to print). Choose the advanced tab, on this tab near the top are five buttons with icons on, the second one shows two pages with A and B on, press this to access the duplex and binding options. In there change from "flip on top edge" to "flip on left edge"
Dark copies (whole pages) are usually a result of poor charge of the drum. Drum is that green thing (usually, seen blue ones too). You get text and graphics in places, where the drum has been discharged (light discharges drum). So if everything is dark - the drum is discharged fully, or not charged at all. Look for bent, dirty or missing connector plates, springs, paper covering contacts. If you get lines it could also be the fuser (hot thing) - needs replacing. Everything depends on how the copy looks like, I would have to see it. Hope this is helpful somehow ;-)
Brother had me take a tissue and wipe the drum. You can spin it with the gear on the left had side of the drum. Then they had me slide the blue tab 30 times back and forth.
Also take a soft cloth and clean the lens on the inside of the printer. First take out the drum unit. The lens in toward the back.
HI there sounds like there is a blockage in the duplex area that is not holding any sensors down. Check the duplex area for torn paper, failing this it maybe a sensor problem which will then need a engineer.
