You can also force the system into safe mode. You click on startup and type in msconfig. Click the general tab and select diags and the system will reboot to safe mode. Change it back to normal to get your system out of safe mode.

If you use XP as in title, all you need to do is pressing F8 key at the right time.

Press F8 key on startup, when the computer just finished post test (RAM, drives check at start) and start loading windows.

If you do not find the right moment , try pressing F8 many times until you open the boot options display with safe mode choice.

My lap top crashes all i get is a black screen, I don't have a disk to reinstall windows XP

When you power on the laptop, press the F8 key several times. A screen should come up asking you to choose an option.
Options should include safe mode and repair your computer. If repair your computer is an option, select that by using the arrow keys and press enter. This may fix your issue.

All of the icons from the screen disappeared!

try to reboot your computer into safe mode.

To use a Safe Boot option, follow these steps:
  1. Restart your computer and start pressing the F8 key on your keyboard. On a computer that is configured for booting to multiple operating systems, you can press the F8 key when the Boot Menu appears.
  2. Select an option when the Windows Advanced Options menu appears, and then press ENTER.
  3. When the Boot menu appears again, and the words "Safe Mode" appear in blue at the bottom, select the installation that you want to start, and then press ENTER.
Then click start
click run
type in msconfig
uncheck everything under the startup tab except your antivirus
and reboot

Unable to start in Safe Mode with Command Prompt in XP Media Center 2005

Hi there. My name is Alex and I am here to help solve this problem

Depending if the BIOS has legacy USB support for keyboard and mouse enabled, you should be able to run safe mode by pressing F8 before the computer boots into windows. I would not recommend going into the BIOS if you do not have much knowledge to the computer as one wrong configuration could cause some behaviour problems or even damage to the pc's components

I recommend connecting a keyboard and mouse that have cable and the PS/2 connectors (purple and green) which can be found at back of the computer at the top. Then restart your computer, hold down F8 and you will be able to run safe mode. The mouse and keyboard will then work

Keep both the keyboard and mouse plugged in and boot windows. When you get into windows, plug in the USB keyboard and mouse into a USB slot and wait whilst it detects it. After a couple of minutes you should be able to use your USB mouse and keyboard and take out the PS/2 keyboard and mouse

I hope this has helped. Please let me know if you have any questions or need further assistance.

WindowsXP Desktop not Opening:

If you mean that your pc constantly restarts, then you may either have a RAM problem, or a PCI Card problem. Start by removing the screw on the back of your computer, The one that is holding down the left side cover if you are looking at it from the front.

Then, simply remove your stick of ram, and put on the pc. Then take off the pc and put back the part in another slot... Put the pc on and see if it boots.

Next, if that does not work, Press the power button and start tapping the F8 key. The Windows Advanced Options Menu appears. If you begin tapping the F8 key too soon, some computers display a "keyboard error" message. To resolve this, restart the computer and try again.
Ensure that the Safe mode option is selected.
Press Enter. The computer then begins to start in Safe mode.

If that does not work, try live help so someone can run you through the process...
