Question about Sony Cyber-Shot DSC-W1 Digital Camera

Lens will not retract

Hi I have the Sony DSC-W1-W12 and has worked beautifully until today. The lens will not retract when turned off or camera will turn on. I went and bought new rechargeable batteries thinking that could be the problem but it is not. Can anyone help me with this? Do I need a new camera? Thanks My cybershot dsc-w1 worked beautifully fine for about three years and now it shuts itself down for no reason, and the lens doesn't retract - in camera mode as well as in view mode. It doesn't happen all the time but it is highly annoying. I tried new batteries without success. First time ever I had a problem with the usually very sturdy Sony products! If there's more people with this problem there must be a recall?

I am having the same problem with my Sony DSC-W1. Apparently, as these Sony's get older, they get finicky about what type of batteries they like. Before you toss the camera, I wouls suggest that you try 2 brand new lithium AA batteries. This seemed to help with my camera.

I have exactly the same problem and I found out that new batteries solve the problem. I also think the battery charger bundled with the W12 version is not very good. You might try (I haven't yet!) a new charger which handles new types of batteries (Ni-MH).

Lens problem on my dsc-w1 sony digital camera

You might not believe and I don't think that this happens with all the same cameras, but I have the same camera and what I did was connect the cable to my printer (hp psc 1315 all-in-one). After I connected it, it was working fine, but I still thought that I wouldn't be able to take pictures...But I turned it on and it worked perfectly! It's amazing! I did this 3 weeks ago to see what happened and I fix my camera without even trying to do so! The only thing that bothers me is that it keeps saying that the batteries are low, although they are recharged...but you can take pictures and do what ever you want!

The zoom lens does not retract on dsc-w1/w12

I've had the same problem on rare occasion. Usually, I just wait a few seconds, then turn the camera on... wait a few more secs, turn off... repeat as necessary. When all that doesn't work, I've replaced with new batteries & the problem is solved.

I found an online manual for your camera. Page 84 talks about the USB Mode Normal with the 4 dots underneath. It also show a troubleshooting area for this and it is on page 96. Hopefully this will get your camera working right again. Here is the link to the pdf manual. http://www.docs.sony.com/release/DSCW1.pdf

Hello, there is a problem with the optical unit (lens). Normaly when the camera is in camera mode the lens should go out. In your case it seems that for some reason the lens is stuck. Please contact your nearest Sony dealer. If you want to repair the camera yourself please tell me. I can send some additional info as well. Regards, Arpi

Sony DSC-W12 Camera

The W12 must be a European version of the W1 or W5 camera. The W12 is not available in the USA. It sounds like you have the "digital zoom" feature active. Digital zoom lowers the quality of the photo. It (in effect) reduces the megapixels applied to an area of a photo. Digital zoom should not be used if you want quality results.
