A manual that pops out of gear has a gearbox problem, a worn and slipping clutch is entirely different - where the engine speed will increase when power is applied independent of the roadspeed.

Are you referring to the clutch pedal? If so you may need to readjust the clutch cable. You do this by turning the clutch cable in a tightening direction while holding the lower nut that is also on the clutch cable. Try loosening it up and see if that brings the pedal back.

You have to remove the transmission from the vehicle in order to replace the clutch plate. It's not the easiest repair to do on a car. The clutch lining can quickly be worn down if the driver rides the clutch or is inexperienced with a manual shift vehicle.

The clutch may be fine but need adjusting or bleeding (if it's a hydraulic clutch). This can also be caused by a failing throwout bearing, pressure plate, clutch fork, low fluid in a hydraulic clutch or a mechanical linkage that's out of adjustment.

Check for low fluid first because it's an easy solution. If the clutch uses a cable or linkage check the adjustment, it may need tightening.

It's important to address this soon because when you have to force a transmission into gear you're wearing out the synchronizers and you'll miss them when they're gone.

Best advice is buy an Official VW Repair Manual by Bentley, Publishers for your specific year and model. It is available from your local VW dealership network and most VW independent repair shops as with other VW internet web sources.

I would get either a Chilton's or Clymer manual for Subaru Legacy that includes your year model. You can get them at most auto parts stores and they are very helpful.

you do mean its a 5 speed with a clutch right? If so you need to purchase a heavy duty clutch which should handle it well .. that is if its a 5 speed standard shift... holler if you need more Jerry
