If you have Roxio or Sonic installed, sometimes the configuration will get corrupt.

Uninstall all application software that relates to any CD/DVD burning, and try the following:

Download the following FREE burner....it is the best burning software I have ever used and it is FREE!
ALWAYS set the burn speed very LOW....4X for CD's and 2X for DVDS and you will never go back to the other burners again!
The BEST options for using InfraRecorder is to burn data discs, burn Disc images and to create Disc images.
I trashed Roxio and Sonic because they are too memory dependent and they contradict each other's configuration...

    Thank you for the reply.

The software is fairly easy to use.

If you need startup help with it, just e-mail me.

Leave most of the default settings as they are and you won't have any trouble.

You have to get used to the directory tree file structure and you can drag & drop files, multiple files (using either the Shift Key and the Ctrl key to tag files)....

Once the files are highlighted, move them to the lower window and then be sure you have the right burner drive selected....

The MOST important is to SLOW DOWN the Burn speed....(Max 4X for CD's and Max 2X for DVDs) because the variance between drives and DVD players differ.

All you have to do is to select Action...Burn Compilation....to a Compact Disc (at this point you can also create an ISO file as a disc image)....

When using CD / DVD for data discs, look carefully at the icons....the CD/DVD have a split line allowing you to select either CD or DVD....

Pay close attention to the bottom status line when dragging files....the color bar warns you when the target disc will be full because it cahnges colors....

    For CD....max 700 MB ( I usually stop at 675) for DVD...4.7 (I stop at 4.4)....

There are other capabilities but I don't typically use anything other than ISO's are data discs...

The Read Disc icon is to convert the CD or DVD to a disc image....you have to select a folder where you can always find it...I created my own called "My DVDs"....and I copy my DVDs from my videocam to that folder....

If you get some of the other options to work successfully, let me know please...

Maybe I will get time one day to experiment.

You can take non-copyright material from a DVD or CD and also make a Disk Image (.ISO file).

You can also write a Disc Image back to the CD / DVD disc.

Be sure to check your drive for the format type...(DVD+R, DVD-R, CD-R, etc) to know it's full potential....

I have the hp inspiron 531s.Can i burn cd or dvd??

Yes your computer has a DVD writer... It should have the software to burn DVDs and CDs

The Dell Inspiron 531 is a desktop personal computer with a Microsoft Windows operating system. An Inspiron equipped with a CD burner can be used to record audio discs using Windows Media Player, which comes installed on the Inspiron as a standard part of the software package Dell loads onto its computers. Blank, recordable discs and pre-recorded audio CDs are the only supplies needed for the project.

I can't burn cds from my computer.

If you can not burn but can read a CD, that means your writer is no longer working. In this case you have to buy a new CD/DVD writer so that you can burn cd/dvd disc. Have a nice day.

By the way if you have the cd cleaner, run the cd cleaner in your cd drive for about 10 minutes and test for burning. Have a nice day.

My lite-on DVD writer is not reading any dvd's as well not writing any DVD's while it is good for CD's..... What is the problem?? How can i correct my DVD writer

Hi Please try and use a different brand of DVD discs. DVD disc quality is sometimes an issue with lite-on drives Also check that you have updated drivers and your media burning software is installed correctly. Again if your using NERO this can be a problem. Try using any other burning software One other thing to try when recording DVDs set the recording speed to lowest Many Thanks Andy

DVD Burner does not recognize blank dvds

Usually 2 things cause this issue.

Incompatable Media or a Bad Drive.
Make sure the type of disk you have is compatable with your burner. Often off brand or no brand media just won't work. HP burners are picky.

Cannot backup files to a cd/dvd

we may need more details but you can try this for now

1. are you sure you have a cd writer or a dvd writer (writer = burner)--- check the front edge of your cd/dvd unit and look for words like "writer" "burner" or writeable next to the word dvd or compact disc... keep in mind not all cd/dvd writer can write (burn) cd or dvds, some may burn cd but not dvds.

2. is your cd/dvd unit compatible with the media (cd or dvd blank disk) you are trying to use.. depending your cd/dvd especifications your dvd/cd drive is compatible with certain types of cd or dvds that are writeable.

3. is the cd/dvd a writeable cd/dvd and is compatible with your cd/dvd drive? for instance.. if you are using a blank dvd and your cd/dvd drive only burn cd/s and read dvd and cd you won't be able to write to the blank dvd.

4. are you trying to burn a dvd in a corporate computer.?? as a user (not an administrator) of your corporate computer you may not have priviledges that will allow them to burn dvd/cd's even you your drive and your media are compatible.

please post
the error that you get
the brand and model of the computer you're using
the type of media you're using

I have a HP media centre pc, which has a lightscribe DVD writer/CD writer. It will only run certain cd's, most of the time it will not recognise there is a disc in the drive. The drive will start up,...

unfortunately it's a sure sign your drive is faulty, the noises are the laser trying to read the tracks, cd's can be easier read than dvd's because the tracks are wider apart, whereas dvd's data is packed tighter together and the reading is more difficult for a faulty laser, you will need to replace it or buy an external usb writer.
