If this is a newer system, this issue is the XP CD you are using doesn't have the needed hard drive controller driver it needs to see the Hard Drive.

Because this is Windows XP, you have only 2 options to resolve the issue. XP will only load a controller driver during install from one of 2 locations. Either a floppy diskette drive or from the XP Cd itself. XP has controller drivers for most systems available at the time the CD was burned, but newer systems, especially ones with SATA hard drives do not have supported drivers in XP CD images. You options are as follows:

  1. Connect a USB Floppy Diskette drive to the system, download the needed driver (If one is available) copy the extracted driver files to the root directory of a floppy diskette and put the diskette in the Floppy drive, then boot the XP CD again. The driver should load automatically if the floppy is in A: Drive when you boot to the CD.
  2. The second option requires slipstreaming the driver (Same one downloaded to a floppy in 1) into the XP image. (This takes a good bit of knowledge in bootable cd creation)
If all this seems to be quite the hassle, then install Vista,

yes you'll have to format the drive before you put xp on...you can use a boot disk with something like fdisk on it...you can boot using a HIREN boot disk (which has FDISK on it) or Roadstarter which is a bootable CD with a whole host of utilities including FDISK.....
or boot with a windows XP disk and choose the repair with console option ...at the command prompt type in FDISK and you will wipe all the data and partition tables ....giving you a raw data drive to install Win XP to

Missing Operating System error

your bought compag computer is a new one , because that error is appears only if the hard drive or the harddisk is defective or damage. Your installation of windows xp is finished totally because sometimes the error is appears because the system installation is not finished and the os system cannot read. try to re install again the windows and delete the old partitions and create again if the problem is the same even there is no error in the installation until it's finished i say that the problem is in the harddisk. Maybe the harddisk develop a bad sector in the master boot record of the hardrive

Problem

Your harddrive is probably S-ATA and xp doesnt have a build in driver for it. You need to download a S-ata driver from hps website, I'm not sure if xp can read the driver from anywhere else but a floppy. So i that case your going to need to buy a USB floppy drive.

http://www.hexus.net/content/item.php?item=1420

Theres a tutorial on how to make the floppy.

If the floppy doesnt work, you might need to copy all the xp files into the hard drive and add the Sata driver into the xp installer, that can be hard todo maybe il give you instructions on that later.

What is this

if you are doing a clean XP install the CD will ask if you if you want to change your partitions.Afterwards it will automatically format the hard drive. Some of the OS discs dont come with drivers you will have to hunt for them on the internet. If you are using a restore disc copyied from a working machine it should have generic drivers already loaded in the disc.

You must disable the native mode for the SATA in setup mode.

***NOTE*** be sure that you have all of your drivers for the SATA and all drivers for windows xp before beginning.

Driver problem

you need to follow these instructions:

0. Download the XP Sata driver from the support page and create the driver floppy, attached usb floppy drive to laptop: http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/SoftwareDescription.jsp?lang=
en&cc=us&prodTypeId=321957&prodSeriesId=3375953&swItem=ob-51454-1&prod
NameId=3375995&swEnvOID=1093&swLang=8&taskId=135&mode=4&idx=1

1. Power up, hit F10 to enter setup
2. DISABLE SATA native mode
3. Follow the installation instructions in the supplied readme.

If you DO NOT disable native mode for the sata drive, you will end up going around in circles with the XP setup informing you there is no hdd in the laptop, even though you specifically installed sata drivers off the floppy.

Once you get past the "Hit enter to install Windows", you can trash all the partitions on the drive, and recreate one big partition for XP :)

***NOTE*** MAKE SURE YOU HAVE ALL OF YOUR DRIVERS FOR XP ON A CD AND READY TO INSTALL. YOU CAN DOWNLOAD THEM AT THE HP WEBSITE.
