Question about Sony VAIO VGN-SZ330P/B Notebook

14 Answers

Vgn-sz330p performance mode stuck.

I noticed the other day that my sony vaio was in stamina mode. I switched the switch back to speed mode and nothing happened, i didn't get the little pop up message asking me to restart. I shut down and rebooted anyway and it still started up in stamina mode. Any idea whats causing this. I have read that many are having the same problem, but haven't seen where anyone has figured this out. Thanks in advance.
I'm also running windows XP.

The battery is dead and no longer accepting a charge. I have also ran the the vaio recover tool that came with the computer that restores all the settings and files to the way they were when i bought it. Still stuck in the stamina mode.

Hello,

Re installation of the system will resolve the issue. However, you begin from scratch again.
Battery and cord can be replace however, you should verify if the either of the two is damage or both. any way you can test by plugging it to the other same laptop model and brand.

anyway this only a suggestion and sometime it will resolve the issue and most of the time it helps.

Reset your battery first and then run your laptop on battery to drain your battery completely and check for battery settings in bios

I think your switch may be faulty.
To enter-exit stamina mode, you must shut down the PC then switch over.
If it is not doing it, the switch is faulty.

However, if the Laptop does not sense a battery, it will not switch either. So if your battery is "dead" the only way to get it back to speed mode is with a new battery.

Hi and welcome to FixYa,

The battery being dead is a contributing factor as to why the Vaio is running in Stamina Mode. This mode is specifically designed to/for lesser power consumption by running slower and using the built-in Intel graphics rather than nVidia 7400 when the BIOS senses that the battery is weak and/or fully dead.

While this problem is rather common, the only possible corrective solution would be to:

  • replace the battery and reset CMOS/BIOS to default;
  • flash the BIOS if an updated version is available from the Sony support site;
  • in some instances, it is the AC power/charger that may have issues. The voltage output is not as regulated/consistent as expected. This is especially so when the WiFi is active.
Good luck and thank you for using FixYa.

Please check power adapter of Vaio as it seems not supplying power to laptop to charge battery so Vaio shifted to Stamina mode.

Remove laptop battery or do system restore to reset the laptop.

Posted on Feb 17, 2009

  • Ginko
    Ginko Feb 17, 2009

Try first remnoving the laptop battery and leaving power cord unplugged for two minutes. This will drain power from laptop and reset it.

If that does nto work, do a system restore to a date before you had the trouble.

If still no luck, go to bios and use the command 'reset to default settings' in bios panel.

  • Ginko
    Ginko Feb 17, 2009

Even if the battery is dead you need to remove that to rdo an hard reset.

If you used the recovery tool you do not need system restore.

    Try resetting the bios.

If all this does not work, the stamina mode is controlled by bios, you can try a bios update, if not even that works then the motherboard is faulty.

I have another problem with my laptop, I think its about the video card, I had to slide my switch to Stamina, so it would stop making lines on the screen, what do you think could be the problem?

Hi:
Your laptop has 2 seperate video processors. The performance processor and the onboard processor. The stamina video runs from the onboard processor, and the performance video is a seperate card. If you only get lines when running off the performance mode, then most likely that video processor card has issues. It can be replaced, but it isn't cheap!
You can hunt around on ebay for one, but don't faint from sticker shock!

My problem with my Sony VGN-SZ330P is the fan, it producing some loud noises, sounds like its grinding something

You can blow compressed air into the cooling vents of the fan. If you notice clouds of dust coming out, then it might be a good idea to disassemble the laptop, clean the fan & air ways, & reassemble it back. If the fan has failed & is no longer running, it might need to be replaced.

If you download "driver max" this will find all system hardware, check all driver versions, download the the latest version, or if you want to pick a known good one you can. It looks like, as you have so many OS on your pc. that there may be some conflicts there. But driver max should sort this. Oh and it's free so no worries there.

Stamina/speed switch

This IS very likely a hardware problem. I'm not very sure about your model but I know that many SZ users w/ G84xx/G86xx NVIDIA card out there are having similar problem -- could be due to NVIDIA chip failure.

http://www.theinquirer.net/gb/inquirer/news/2008/07/09/nvidia-g84-g86-bad

Sony had just acknowledged this problem (failed G84/G86 NVIDIA chips) recently but unfortunately SZ series models were not included in the list.

http://www.theinquirer.net/inquirer/news/1528907/sony-admits-failing-nvidia-chips-months-late

In case you're using SZ model and are having G84/G86 nvidia card, just give sony service center a call, at least to let them take your issue into their record.

Stamina/Speed switch not working on VGN-SZ484N

It depends on the game. And how detailed the game is. like basket ball vrs. mario you know. differen't graphics differen't speeds. Some time you can adjust the speed on the game which will in turn force the speed of the graphics card.
