Question about Pure Digital Flip Video Ultra Camcorder

No Audio on camera

I can hear audio on computer playback but I have no audio on the camera playback

Audio from Flip Ultra can just barely be heard. Playback on computer, loud and clear. Volume on camera is up as high as it will go. Audio in the camera sounds like I'm speaking thrrough two tin cans on a string.

Flip support claims it is the way the unit was "designed so that I can play it back discreetly in a private setting."

Funny that the first one that i received sounded great ... for about 5 minutes ... before I got the tin can voice.

Okay, I don't know if this is right but it's worth a try. Have you tried to turn up the volume?

Copying movies to computer sound won't play

Most digital HDD sony handycam video cameras encode MPEG-2 files in 5.1 surround sound audio. You probably are not hearing sound because your playback software does not support 5.1 surround sound encoded MPEG-2 files. Try using a newer peice of software with the latest codecs installed.

XL1s and 4 channel audio

Hi!
Unfortunately, Premiere Pro CS3 can only handle two channels of audio at a time when capturing. You could try capturing with Scenalyzer or another program that can handle four channels simultaneously.
Hope this helps!

Intermittent audio problems from mic jack

This camera has a history of problems with the audio encode/decode process IC which causes loss of audio input and distorted audio processing. Most noticeable is the loss of audio packets in playback of pre-recorded material.
If your problem is in the mic. jack I believe you would be hearing the buzz while monitoring with the headphones. Also, if the camera has been dropped, the audio I/O board connector can break away from the main board causing a bad ground loop or loss of phantom power, this is a common problem.

Hope this helps in some way,

No audio during playback

On my handycam you have to hit the Volume + button while playing back. Everytime you playback it starts volume at zero and you have to volume up to hear anytime you playback.

When I record using my microphone I hear "pops" and 'hissing" when listening to the playback. What can I do to prevent this? The moment I plug in an external mic (a Sennheiser) a low level rumble starts...

These mini video cameras are great for a lot of reasons, but the drawback is the tiny buttons and connectors, like the microphone input. It's probably actually a stereo microphone input.
If it is stereo (check the manual), then try using a stereo adapter, where you plug the adapter into the stereo mic input on the camera, and then plug the single microphone into only one side of the adapter ... then copy the audio to the "missing" side later in production ...
Alternative: record the audio separately onto a decent quality audio recorder with proper microphone jacks, then find the corresponding audio and synchronize it in software production. This is often how professionals do it, and one of the reasons you see the familiar "clapboard" snap at the beginning of movie shoots ... clapping your hands on camera right before you shoot will give you a visible action that will correspond to a peak in the audio soundwave that you can match up to synchronize the audio once you put the video and audio into your computer.
Another alternative - new item these days is an audio interface for video cameras that is basically a small black box that mounts onto the video camera or tripod, plugging into the tiny input on the camera and providing XLR microphone inputs ... just go to Borders and pick up any magazine on video production, you'll see them advertised all over the place ...

Good luck, hope I have helped in some way!

Audio volume

Unfortunately, connecting an external mic is not an option that was engineered into this model camcorder. Likewise the speaker and small amplifier for audio playback is simply what it is. You should be able to adequately hear normally recorded levels. If not, maybe there is a problem with the internal condensor mics or the playback speaker. If you are unable to obtain a resonable level using A/V cables to a TV, then something could be wrong. I have not seen problems with this model regarding sound, but anything can happen. Good luck, ms

I had the same problem. Try this: open the LCD screen so that you can access the playback buttons.Make sure camera is in playback mode. Press the "menu" button. Select "narration" . Switch narration to "off" .Now you should hear the recorded audio when your tape is playing.
