Question about APC (BE500U-WEB) (BE500UWEB) UPS System

1 Answer

APC Back UPS 350 ES won't run on battery power.

I bought an APC UPS (350 ES) on ebay - seller says the battery was good. However, when I pull the plug, I get no battery power. The plugs get ~118 when the unit is plugged into the wall. When I pull the plug, it immediately drops to 0.

When I pull the battery out, it reads 11.5V, and when I plug the unit into the wall and test the two leads which attach to the battery, I'm reading 14V.

I'm moderately comfortable messing with electricity and the sort, so I'm not afraid to break this open and take a look inside, but I don't know what to look for that might cause this problem.

As best I can tell, it woudl seem that the battery is holding a charge - and is charging correctly - but when the power goes off, it's not switching to battery power.

Occasionally when I plut the backup into the wall the power light flashes and the unit emits a non-stop beep. I think I read somewhere that it's saying the battery is dead and should be replaced, though the electrical tester would seem to suggest that diagnosis is incorrect?

I only paid $9 for it, so if it's dead, it's not the end of the world, but it'd be nice to get my satellite receivers on battery backup for the occasional power glitch that we get here (they're pretty infrequent, but my silly receivers take 10+ minutes to reboot, so I'd like to get this worked out).

I'm having the same problem with mine. I get 122 volts when plugged into the wall, and it tells me that I get less than 1 min of use once I unplug, and it actually lasts for 10 seconds before getting a screeching sound.

The screeching sound is normal. Its telling you "HEY, I HAVE NO POWER. THIS IS A PROBLEM." and trying to attract as much attention as possible. It will also do that if you run a self test with the software and the test fails.

Its been a while since I worked on these during an outage, but I believe there is a way to use the software (PowerChute business edition, if you're using a SmartUPS. There is a personal version with less features for other home models) to silence the alarm. I think some of them had a button you could push on the unit to silence it as well, but look this up first. Push the wrong one and it powers everything down.

It sounds like its testing the battery and its failing. Thats typically what the beep tells you when its plugged in. The battery needs a certain charge to pass the test. There is a serial port on the back, but it uses a custom cable (RJ-11 to DB-9) BUT it uses a custom pin arrangement. If it didn't come with one, ebay will be your best bet again.

However, your easiest solution is to either just buy a new one, or take it to a battery specialist. They often have replacement batteries for WAY cheaper than APC.

You might want to just buy a new one though. If you're using it for home theater equipment, a new one will come with a warranty that will replace up to $10 or $15k worth of damage to your equipment.

APC BACK-UPS ES 500VA fails to provide back up during power failure

Get APC Powerchute Personal Edition for free and run it. If it says your battery isnt charged, check its voltage disconnected. Charge it with a car battery charger and see if its still a good battery. If not , replace it. If the battery is good, then check the charging voltage. Should be about 14 volts. if not, check the small transformer on the main board. Should be 120 in and 17 to 18 out. 4 diodes in a bridge for charge. The input to the transf has small fuse into it alone.

Alternating green and orange light with constant beeps

Verify that the usb to ups cable is pluggled in properly. Also you may not have a good ground. Disconnect the ups and plug it in another outlet to test with nothing else plugged into it, to see if it still beeps. You can also try and upgrade the ups software from apc.com

Beeping

These UPS systems do a self check everytime you press the power button. If the voltage in the battery is too low, you'll get a long drawn out beep. A new battery should solve that problem and it is even economical with a unit this size. Here's a link: http://batteryinternational.com/apc-backups-es-be350es-ups-battery-ups-batteries-f1.html

Simply remove the single phillips screw on the bottom of the unit and remove the battery cover. Replace battery and that's it. Very simple to do.

UPS shuts off intermittently and beeps

More than likely it just needs a new battery. If the power is sagging (called a brownout) the UPS is trying to switch over to the battery to keep the power consistent. The beeping is probably a code that indicates there is an issue with low voltage on the battery. New batteries are around $20-25. Here's a link to the replacement battery: http://batteryinternational.com/apc-backups-es-be350es-ups-battery-ups-batteries-f1.html

Hope that helps.

APC Back-UPS ES 350 - when powered on has a blinking green light Is this normal

A blinking green light is likely an indication that the internal battery is nearing the end of its usable life cycle. If it's over 3 years old this is likely the case. To test, plug something in to the battery outlets and pull the plug of the UPS from the wall. If you get a short runtime (or none at all) it's the battery. Batteries are under $20 and can be found here: http://www.batteryinternational.com/apc-backups-es-be350u-ups-battery-ups-batteries-f1.html

Take off the bottom cover and make sure the battery is connected (both terminals).
Plug the unit into a wall outlet.
Press the power button to turn it on. Leave it plugged in for 8 hours to charge the battery. Do this with nothing plugged into the unit.

Done.

APC ES-350 won't turn on; all I see is a blinking light.

Try looking for a small circuit breaker on the side that says "press to reset" - you could have tripped it accidentally when you unplugged the iPod.  Also, try pressing and holding the UPS power switch for 10-15 seconds.  That should force a power on as well.

My solution was to unplug everything, hit the reset button, and then power the unit back up. The problem I found to be that I had my laser printer connected to the "surge + battery" side, and for some reason no laser printer can be connected to it.
