I am looking for a convenient, relatively high quality, wired, stereo
microphone to be used off camera with my Sony TRV 900 camcorder. One
immediate use I have is to record music recitals- piano, violin, etc.
--no loud rock stuff. I would also like to be able to use it with my
Sony minidisc recorder as well.
I had seen the two Sony models listed above and had some quetions.
First, I was looking for any general feedback from people who have
used them.
Secondly, I wanted to know some things about the cord. What type do
you use, where would you get it, and most importantly---how long an
extension cord can be used? I would assume that if the cord were very
long, that signal dropoff and noise would become a problem.
I appreciate any relative feedback.

understand the fundamental advantage of balanced/shielded microphones.
I am looking for some incremental improvement compared to the on
camera mic but didn't really want to get into more expensive mics,
converter boxes, etc.
Do you know whether over relatively short runs of say 20 - 30 feet,
the unbalanced systems have even a chance of sounding good? Do you
actually own either of the Sony mics mentioned?
Any suggestions for setting up a balanced system that would not cost a
fortune? I saw converter boxes by Beachtech and XLR-Pro- each running
about $225. Until I buy the mics, cords, etc. this will be a more
costly and elaborate system than I had wished since I am only a video
hobbiest.
BTW, I saw Sony sells an inexpensive mono wireless 900 MHZ system for
only $125. Do you think such a system would work for my puposes, or do
I have to go to professional grade stuff.
I really appreciate your taking the time to give me feedback.

ranging from mechanical sounds (the microphone capsules are not really well
isolated) to electrical interference. I recently tried to extend the cable
of one of mine by 50 feet only to be informed by the camera operator that
the local Country and Western station was coming in real clear.
You really need to go balanced, low-impedance if you are going to use the
microphone at any distance from the camera. Then use one of the balanced to
unbalanced converter boxes that bolt to the bottom of your camera. Or, use
a wireless (mono only, I know).
