1 Answer

Inspiron 531S Desktop wont start up

When I run system test I get error code 5300:0119 and various
video mode test failures...expected FFFFFFFFh read FF7FFF7Fh
Does this mean bad video card, or is there something else that
needs to be checked.

Hi,

Yes there is a problem with your video card.I also faced this problem.i tried to flash bios and updated the video drivers but nothing worked. There is no other way to resolve this issue.Only way is to replace the video card. But the video card is integreted on the motherboard itself. So you will have to replace the motherboard which is cheaper than repairing your faulty motherboard. So i suggest you to replace your motherboard.

thanks

Does the computer boot into Windows? If not it appears there is an issue with your hard drive. When you turn on the machine, try to get into the diagnostics mode of the computer (F12) and then select BIOS Diagnostics. From there run the tests to see if the hard drive is bad. From there you might have to get a new one.

Inspiron 531s will not boot up, keeps beeping, saying it is in power save mode. How do I fix the problem

System Beep Codes The Inspiron™ 531 / 531s system can emit a series of beeps during start-up if the display cannot show errors or problems. These series of beeps, called beep codes, identify various problems. One possible beep code consists of repetitive three short beeps. This beep code indicates the computer encountered a possible system board failure.
The series of beeps has a 3-second delay before it repeats. The series and delays continually loop until you press the power button.
Code Description Suggested Remedy 1 BIOS ROM checksum in progress or failure System board failure; covers BIOS corruption or ROM error 2 No memory modules detected
  1. If you have two or more memory modules installed, remove the modules, reinstall one module, and then restart the computer. If the computer starts normally, reinstall an additional module. Continue until you have identified a faulty module or reinstalled all modules without error.
  2. If available, install a good memory module of the same type into the computer.
  3. If the problem persists, contact Dell.
3 Chipset error (North and Southbridge chipset, DMA/IMR/Timer Error for Intel® platform); chipset error System board failure. Power LED is blinking amber. Time-Of-Day Clock test failure Gate A20 failure Super I/O chip failure Keyboard controller test failure 4 RAM read/write failure
  1. Ensure no special memory module/memory connector placement requirements exist.
  2. Verify the memory modules you are installing are compatible with the computer.
  3. If the problem persists, contact Dell.
5 Real time clock failure. Possible battery failure or system board failure.
  1. Replace the battery.
  2. If the problem persists, contact Dell.

Error code 5300:0119

Can you start it in safe mode? If so, try to do a system restore.
Next do a start>run>sfc/scannow to see if there are any system files messed up.
Can't start in safe mode? Then try to boot from the system disk and at the first prompt to do a repair type "R". Then run chkdsk /r to see if this solves the problem. This will fix bad files.

Still out of luck? Then you are looking probably in the right direction when you suspect the video card.

Problems with Dell Inspiron 9400 Video Memory conflict -

This solution is totally incorrect. He is having the problem that many of us face with the GeForce Go 7900 GS and the Inspiron 9400. There is a known issue with eventual overheating and the video card going bad. This is specific to the single-pipeline chip, in which their is a new dual-pipeline style that fixes the cooling/overheating issue that eventually fries the video chip. Dell has not 100% took ownership of this. I am on my fourth fried video card (thank god for the 3-year warranty I got) in which they have previously replaced with the single-pipeline style. This time they are finally replacing the laptop with either a new Inspiron 9400 (better be dual-pipeline chip) or a NEW equivalent laptop.
