Question about LaCie Hard Disk 1TB Desktop with Hi-Speed USB2.0 USB 2.0 Hard Drive

1 Answer

HD fan keeps coming on every 30 seconds and runs for 15.

There is no data transfer taking place when this happens. I am running it with my eMac under OS 10.5. I bought the unit primarily to use as a back-up & have backed-up my entire system already. However three times the computer screen turned black & I had to turn it off & on again to get back to where I was. The computer has never behaved like this before. I have another external drive connected with firewire that I have used for over two years & it has never given me a problem.

Hi,
a 6ya expert can help you resolve that issue over the phone in a minute or two.
best thing about this new service is that you are never placed on hold and get to talk to real repairmen in the US.
the service is completely free and covers almost anything you can think of (from cars to computers, handyman, and even drones).
click here to download the app (for users in the US for now) and get all the help you need.

Install unit into a another desktop with sata drives. Leave bootup configuration as is and then see if unit boots up and sees the installed drive as a slave. If so transfer the data over to the main drive. If the drive is really messed up it may not even allow the good hard drive to boot up; then you will not be able to even access the data on the bad drive and you may have to take it to a data recovery service - ouch (expensive).

My external hard drive takes HOURS AND HOURS to do it's job. what am i doing wrong? Thanks. Pamela

What's the model of your external hard drive, and what's the model of your PC? There are a few possible reasons for your external hard drive to take hours to complete a copy or backup job. The two largest factors in how long a backup takes would be the amount of data being backed up, and the speed of the data transfer. If you have an older computer/laptop, it could be running USB 1.1, which is much slower than USB 2.0. Even if you're running USB 2.0, if you're backing up hundreds of gigabytes of data, it could take hours anyway. Whether you're running USB 1.1 or 2.0 is up to the hardware, not any software. If you're running on USB 1.1, and have a desktop PC, you can install a USB 2.0 controller card to speed up your transfer rates, but if you just have a ton of information to back up - it's just going to take a long time. Hope this helps.

When I plug in my 320GB My Passport Western

It seems your HDs left over portion which is not showing is not formatted for the particular OS in which you are trying to copy. It is advised to backup your HD contents and format the HD with the OS from which you want to take data in the same FAT system which that OS is using.

Well, data recovery service is pretty expensive. In your case the MOST effective way is to try some so-called data recovery software. See if you can grab some of your precious data back.

First of ALL - Connect your hard drive to your personal computer. And install this software Wondershare Data Recovery on the computer in order to perform data recovery. Get the program from its site.
data recovery (for Windows OS)
Mac data recovery (for Mac OS X)

Good luck. I hope that my reply has shed some light on the problem! Remember - Always make multi-Backups of your precious data!
