Thanks for your advice, tried everything... sadly it seems to be the actual physical hard-drive, but it is still under warranty so am returning it today. Thanks again.

Its NOT the hard drive itself.
Its the master boot record on the hard drive that has failed.
The master boot record is like an index or an address book of a hard drive. It hold records of whats on the hard disk and the physical location of files and directory's.
What most likely happened was the computer was NOT shut down correctly and a power serge corrupted the master boot record or someone accidentally or purposely deleted files they should not have.
If you are not able to follow jmorgan123 advice, the easiest way to fix this is to re-install windows using the recovery disk (operating system cd), HOWEVER you WILL loose all your files on your hard drive as you will need to reformat your drive during the re-install.
If you are unsure how to install windows
put the system recovery disc in the drive and follow the on screen prompts.
If you still can get your computer working after you try a re-install of windows, maby your best bet is to return the computer under the warranty.

Your computer is not recognizing the hard drive.
Hopefully your have your operating system cd.
Put the CD in the drive. Boot from the Windows CD. It has three options: Recovery Console, Repair Installation, and Normal Installation.
Try the Recovery Console. It should scan your hard drive and detect Windows installations, and ask you which one you want to examine. It may ask for your administrator password. Then it should give you a C: prompt. Get a directory (dir) and if it looks okay (no garbled text) and reports the free space, things are probably okay.
If you get to this point with no trouble:
At the C prompt, say FIXMBR <enter>. I'm not sure what kind of output it gives, but it should rewrite your master boot record. Then at the next C prompt, say FIXBOOT then enter. That'll rewrite your partition boot record. The two boot records are the first steps to booting the operating system.
Now, try booting without the CD. If it boots, then the FIXMBR and FIXBOOT worked. But I suspect you'll have the same error.

If that works and you continue getting the same error, boot from the CD again. Press 'Enter to Setup Windows now' or some such. Then, you want to perform a Repair Installation.
Don't worry, this won't remove or delete any of your files or settings. It only replaces Windows OS files.
