Question about AT&T Blackberry Curve 8300 Smartphone

Trackball "select" not working

I've had my Curve 8300 for 15 months, so any warranty is out. It started a few weeks ago becoming difficult to push in on the trackball to select an item. Now it won't register any pushes inwards. I can roll the ball around and the different items highlight but I can't "select" an item.

I've tried the obvious, such as cleaning the ball and contacts on the BB.

AT&T will sell me a new one with no discount to replace my existing one. O.o

Anyone know some place to have it looked at in the Atlanta area or sent off that won't charge an arm and a leg to look at it and give an estimate?

Not the trackball. Swapped out mine with a friend and still has the same issue. Looks to be an issue with the berry itself and not the trackball assembly.

The user who said to take the trackball out, and gently remove the orange flap (i used a safety pin to gently pry it open), and clean reverse side of it with qtip and drop of water, dried it with other side of qtip, and replaced it. it worked instantly. thanx, been months without the trackball click, and it finally works!!

Hi - I had the same problem as this and tried to solve it by taking out the trackball and cleaning it as detailed in other posts. However this did not work.

I got it working eventually by carefully lifting the small square orange plactic cover which the trackball sits over and presses down on to select. By cleaning under that I got it to work. You need to be careful as this cover also holds some connectors in place.

The moral of the story is to keep the curve in its holster in your pocket (I lost my holster which is when the trouble started).

Have fun

It could be the sensors that the trackball sits on the pwb. You can try cleaning them but if that doesn't do the trick, you might need a new curve.

If you have a warranty on the phone than you should bring it in right away, if not than consider finding a replacement. this happened to my phone and it was deemed beyond economical repair due to liquid damage.

Same pblm

there is an conductive lense on the bottom of your track ball and on the circuit board. the reason to have two lenses on one connector is unknown to me. but luckily for you (usually) the trackball lense will flatten and need replaced. to replace a trackball is 8.99$ u.s. and just press ur fingernail at the bottom of the silver ring and pull up GENTLY! after that there are 3 snaps for the new trackball (left, right, and bottom) just snap into place! if that doesnt work you may have to replace the connector on the pcb which is difficult and voids warranty!

My 8320 doesn't want to respond

Usually the button membrane under the track ball goes bad. If you're out of warranty try to remove the trackball and push the membrane back in place if it became misaligned, clean it if necessary. There is a Blackberry Repair Guide that shows how to open a Blackberry and remove the track ball yourself. Once it is open it's as easy as peeling the membrane off the logic board, scratching its bottom with a flathead screwdriver. There are also third party blackberry repair services that will do this for you or supply you with a membrane if you need a new one.

Difficulty selecting with my trackball

If its that new, take it back. If you said that it was older, it would most likely be that there is dirt below the trackball. you can easily pop it out to clean under it, but if its new why even bother.

Select the Address Book application from the main screen (with all the icons.) The address book icon is black and white in the default theme.
Press the "Menu" button (just left of the trackball)
Scroll up or down to "New Address" and push the trackball in (select the menu item.)
Fill in all the details that you have for the contact.
