OK, If TV is bit older one and have one HDMI port then hook cable box with TV through HDMI cable.
Connect home theater with TV through RCA connectors (either yellow or component video) and red-white for audio. In this arrangement you can listen cable box sound through home theater if you connect another red-white cable between TV Audio Out ( Monitor Out Audio) and input of home theater.

Both HDMI will hooked to TV as TV should have 2 HDMI inputs.
You can listen DVD sound by home theater system but cable box sound will come from TV only.

use component outputs of that unit to play on tv.Or use component or video output of sony unit and connect to cable box if available and use the source switching on cable box to change sources that way you wont have to unplu HDMI cable..By the way HDMI has a new challenger in the near future called ' DISPLAY PORT' ..

SOURCE: Sony surround sound hookup

In short, the answer is: Hook up all three to each other. I have a Samsung DLP HDTV, and I was trying to hook up a Sony DAV-HDX500 home-theater system and a Comcast HD set-top box, but I found that the Sony user guide is helpful only for setting up the speakers. Most of what it had to say about HDMI and getting the TV sound or cable sound to go through the speaker system was wrong (or, at least, it didn't work for me). So, here's what I did. I connected Component video cables (Y/Pb/Pr out) from the Cable box to the TV (Y/Pb/Pr in), audio cables from the Cable box (audio out) to the Sony system ("SAT/Cable" audio in), and an HDMI cable from the Sony system (HDMI out) to the TV (HDMI in). This allows me to 1) watch DVDs with surround sound through the TV's HDMI source (when the "DVD" format is selected on the Sony system), 2) watch cable with surround sound through the TV's Component source (when the "SAT/Cable" format is selected on the Sony system), and 3) watch cable WITHOUT the surround sound, as I did before I ever had the Sony system. One item of note: When watching a non-HD channel with the surrond sound on, the audio is slightly out of synch with the video; thankfully, there's no such problem on HD channels. Anyway, I hope this helps. It drove me crazy for two days straight!

My Sony Projection tv is HD ready, but when I connect the cables from the HD receiver, I have a black screen. Thank you Kevin Davis

myrtle1996,

With so little information I will have to make alot of assumptions to help you. Are you hooking up a HDMI cable? If so it is straight forward. Plug one end into the HDMI connection on the receiver and the other into a HDMI port on the TV. Note the port designation (HDMI 1 or 2). Enter the menu on the TV and change the input to the proper HDMI input. This should make the unit work.

Thanks for using FixYa and for the great rating.

Hooking up my Sony HD Tv

Couple of items come to mind.
In the menu of the receiver, is there a way to choose video and RGB?
Set the receiver to SAT
Connect the HD Cable Box to SAT
Check the TV is on Monitor RGB.
Check the input being used by the monitor RGB cables is selected on the TV.
Have a picture? NO, receiver has issues.
Yes? Do this with each input to confirm they work.
You can reset the whole receiver to factory by holding the tone button down and holding the standby button for three seconds. (This clears your speaker setups, too.)

This is posted under the Sony STR-DE685 heading, so I assume that's what you have. (If not, your receiver may have other hookup options available.) It might help if you download the manual if you need a copy from Sony's site here. It details all the rear panel connections.

This receiver doesn't have HDMI connections, so you'll need to make your connections using RCA cables It doesn't pay you to get an HD cable box if you're planning on connecting it through the receiver.

Output to the TV is very simple. Use a component video cable to go from the component monitor output on the receiver to the TV's component input. Then switch the TV to that input, turn off its speakers and listen to the sound through the receiver. Only one cable going to the TV that way.

Inputs will need separate audio and video connections since there are no HDMI connectors. Use the component video connection for your DVD player for the best video quality. The DVD/LD input offers those jacks. You can connect your cable box to the VIDEO 2 input using component video connections (if the box has those outputs) or composite video. Then the video and audio from the box will run through the receiver as well.

If you want to get a new HD cable box, you'll need to run a cable from its HDMI output to an input on the TV, and switch the TV to that input to watch the box. You can still run the audio signal through the receiver though. That will add one more cable to your hookup, and you'll have to remember to switch inputs.

Hope this helps. Thanks for using Fixya!

Video Issue with Onkyo 606 when trying to watch Cable TV.

When this happens and you just see the input label try to press the power button on the front of the cable box and see if it brings the picture up. If this does produce the picture then it is a good possibility that something is interfering with the remote communicating with the cable box. I don't know if you have it contained in an entertainment center or how you have placed your equipment but if there is glass try to clean it and also wipe down the front of the cable box and make sure there is an unobstructed view of the front of the cable box.
Good Luck.

Sony str-dg820. having a problem getting video on tv

Hook up Composite / Component Monitor Out wire from receiver to TV video input because receiver will not change analog input into HDMI
You need to connect receiver and TV through analog video terminals as above.
Actually you are expecting that receiver will convert DVD player and Xbox analog video input into digital HDMI signal for TV and This is incorrect.

How do I hook the STR DE 575 up to my tv?

Usually if you have a Cable or Satellite box, you would hook up a Fiber Optic or Digital Coax cable from the Sat/Cable box to the Sony Receiver. Then for HD, an HDMI cable or componet cables from the Sat/Cable box to the TV

How to connect new HD cable box to receiver

HI:
You are using a new HD Cable box, that are using componet video cables for HD, Unfortunetly this receiver does not have componet inputs, so you will just have to run the audio from the televison directly to the receiver by connecting the video out and audio out from the television to the receiver's video Input one. This will require a normal RCA composite cables yellow, red, white. Connect one end of each of the cables to televisions output terminals, and the other to the input one on the receiver. Note: Your TV might have a seperate term called Monitor out, Connect the yellow here, and the red and white to audio out. You can do the same for the DVD but you have to use the same cables,Also the television will not display HD picture this way as this is not a HDTV Receiver. If you just want TV sound to the receiver then do not use the video(Yellow) cable just use the audio out terminals from the tv and connect to Input one on the receiver. you can do this with the cable box also but you have to use RCA type cables . If you want the full HD experience then a new up todate receiver is necessary.
