Question about Kenmore 18.3 cu. ft. Top Freezer Refrigerator w/Through-the-Door Water Dispenser

1 Answer

Water dripping from freezer when defrost kicks on.

Inside refrigerator, I believe when the defroster kicks on, water will drip from the roof of refrigerator/floor of freezer. The water will often freeze on the top shelf but sometimes works its way all the way down to vegetable crisper. I believe it is from the defrost unit as it does not do it all the time - but I really don't know. I have a 9 year old Kenmore Refrig. with no ice maker.

Opened up the bottom of freezer and there was all ice. Broke most of the ice and then use a hair dryer on the rest of it. The plug was completely invisible under the ice. Once found, I used boiling water in a turkey baster to squirt into the plug. After several applications, the water flowed out. So far so good. Now I have to just wait and hope. But I am curious as to what caused the initial clog in the plug in the first place. If is was ice, why did the water freeze? Will post further in a few weeks and let you know how its going. Thanks.

You probably have a plugged drain in the freezer compartment. Open that up and check it. Hope this helps!

the defrost thermistor is your problem: it is going low (turning off) the defrost circuit far too quickly; it is a solid state version of a gas filled cold control sensor.
It "tells" the adaptive defrost controller circuit board the condition: (frost level) of the evaporator and, intitiates the defrost mullion heater timer. if it turns off to soon defrost
mullion heaters turn off and, icing occurs. I do not know; right off hand: which boards you are alluding to; however I believe you are referring to the power supply board for the

Water dripping inside of freezer, forms ice-cicles, water doesn't dispense and temp. rises on both freezer and refrigerator.

Check rear inside wall of freezer for frost build up, this prob is an indication that you have a defrost problem, like a bad defrost heater or defrost control.

The fridge is dripping water from the inside roof. seems like it is comming from the freezer, I dont have any of the water lines hooked up?

I believe your condensate defrost drain is either blocked or frozen over behind the rear panel of your freezer. There are many reasons for this happening for example water leaking from a water supply line for the dispenser or ice maker, a crack in the defrost pan, water leaking inside and draining through the refrigerator cabinet, but most are caused by a defrost drain line blockage. Below is a link that may be helpful so try to take it all in and use the parts that most refer to your specific problem, there is also a shot movie that makes the repair look easy, Thanks Sea Breeze

The noise you are referring to is sizzling, popping and dripping noise. This is normal during a defrost cycle - there is a heating element that melts frost ont he evap coils - the water drips through a drain through a hose at the back of your freezer and onto a drip fan which later gets evaporated. The way the entire circuit is designed, in serie, is that once the defrost kicks in, it will cut off the contact to your compressor, once defrost stops the circuit si switched back on and your compressor starts..... It is possible for a defrost not to stop due to thermostat/limited problems in which case your unit would be stuck in this cycle and your food would melt and spoil :) In very rare cases will the defrost be stuck and your compressor running.

This can be fixed with a control board replacement at the back of your freezer.

Water dripping from freezer onto top shelf of fridge with ice buildup back of freezer

the defroster isn't close enough to the drain to be effective. remove the back wall of the inside of the freezer, remove the excess ice. clear out the ice from the drain using hot water and a turkey baster. there is a kit from whirlpool that uses a piece of metal and a screw around the defrost rod, but I found out that a piece of 14 gauge solid core wire with the insulation stripped off works great too. stick the stripped wire into the drain, 2 to 3 inches, and wrap the rest around the defrost rod.

Freezer is dripping water into the fridge

If your refrigerator has a ice maker or not I think the drain is clogged for the defrost water. We may need to unplug and look behind the freeze back wall to see what is happening. If you would please see if you can find the model number so I can help you better, Thanks Sea Breeze
