Question about IBM ThinkPad T42 Notebook

2 Answers

T42 only boots occasionally

When you attempt to power on, the system won't boot. Every once in awhile, it does boot and works normally. Problem is that its booting less and less often - there are some light changes when you attempt to boot, so doubt the power button is at fault. When it doesn't work, have to remove power plug and battery to reset. Anyone know what may be wrong?

Shut off in middle of system reboot to earlier date and will not boot up now.

Hello
The fault should be of its bios backup battery. It is 3V disc battery. Just switch On the system, and press 'delete' button during boot up to enter its bios settings, and see whether the time is correct. If not set the time and reboot again and see whether it boots up normally. If it does, and it won't boot up normally after shut down, repalce the battery with a new one, set time as dectibed above once again. The system will be alright. OK.

Laptop boots up fine but will get a black screen after about 5 minutes of use and won't reboot normal after that for awhile

I fixed a similar problem by doing the following. With your computer on and plugged in, remove the battery. Then press the power button to do a cold boot. Once it's off unplug it and wait about a miniute then plug it back in and restart it w/o the battery in it. Once it is re-booted reinstall the battery. Hope this helps.

My laptop will not boot - Operating System Not Found, cannot enter BIOS system - nothing at all. When I try to access the BIOS, the key keeps beeping. It is a Type 2373. Thank You -- IMCND

How are you attempting to enter the setup (BIOS)? Here are the steps:
Press the blue Access IBM button when the message "To interrupt normal startup, press the blue Access IBM button" is displayed to enter the ThinkVantage Productivity Center, then select Start setup utility to open the BIOS Setup Utility.

My previously healthy Thinkpad T42, will not post.

Hi,
The Thinkpad T42 doesn't have a reset button on it like the older IBM's used to.

There could be a problem with the battery. With the machine turned off remove AC power and then the battery. Plug in AC power again and see if the laptop will boot without the battery.
If it boots let it load up as normal and then shut it down again, reinsert the battery and try to boot it up. If it boots fine, if not then there is a problem with the battery.

Please post back if you need anymore advice.

Good luck.

This is very possibly a hardware problem, namely a crack in the motherboard. Sorry, no easy or cheap fix for it if that's the case.
