Question about Maxtor OneTouch III Mini Edition 120GB External USB 2.0 Portable 120 GB IDE Hard Drive
I bought my Maxtor OneTouch Mini III three months ago, loaded files on it fine with my Ibook G4 and then left the country. I am currently in Kenya and do not have easy access to a computer or external repair place. There are two aspects to my maxtor problem:
1) I have a Hitch, a device that will transfer files from my camera or flash drive to another USB storage device without the help of a computer. I used it prior to leaving with the maxtor mini and everything worked fine. Now when I plug it into the hitch, the maxtor light turns on, but the hitch does not recognize it as a storage device that I can transfer files too. There is no funny noise being made by the maxtor. Neither time, nor unplugging the device nor switching off the device solves the problem.
2) I plugged the maxtor into several types of pcs of varying technology levels, including one brandnew laptop, and ran into the same problem. The Maxtor light turns on, the computer recognizes it as a USB storage device, but I can not find it under My Computer, save any files to it or open any of the files on it. I have found it recognized as a driver, but can not get it to install so that the computers recognize it as a viable place to store files.
** I never dropped it, though it has been traveling in my backpack.
Is there anything I can do while traveling? Or is this a lost cause and I need to buy a new storage device? Is it a software problem? I need to transfer over 2GBs of photos as soon as possible so a quick answer would be wonderful!

Offhand, your described concern unfortunately is a hardware failure. To be more specific, the hard disk (HD) inside the Maxtor OneTouch Mini III.
The Maxtor OneTouch Mini III is basically an enclosure to house the HD and the electronics interface. As you have tried, the interface is recognized but the HD is not and therefore files could not be transferred to or from it either from any PC or the Hitch.
Considering your location, limitations and requirements of transferring files (as well as keeping in mind possibility of recovering the contents of the HD), suggested course of action :
purchase locally a no name enclosure/interface and appropriate HD and make your own.
purchase locally some other form of external/USB storage media such as a large capacity flashdrive, additional memory cards for the camera.
every so often, upload your files, pictures to an online temporary storage such as RapidShare.

Sounds like you lost the drivers for your external. W/ out an online PC you cannot download them either. Do you have a friend that could do this on their PC? That is the only way.
