Question about Sony Playstation 3 (PS3) Console

1 Answer

Slow and jumpy

Everytime i turn my playstation 3 on it loads up very slowly, sometimes it comes up that it has to restore the hard drive. everytime i do this it will come on and be very slow and it keeps freezing during games and things. i have had it only just over a year i dont expect something that cost so much to be braking already, i have already done a system restore in which it speeds up the next time you turn it on but as soon as i turn it off again, by the time i next turn it on its need to keep restoring the system...any help or have playstations gone ridiculously downhill?

Hi there,

your facing a heat problem im affraid, if your PS3 is out of date i sugguest you take it apart using this guide here.

once you get to your CPU and GPU you will notice the thermal compound has cracked and dryed up, i sugguest cleaning this all over and laping it with wet and dry paper, pref 1200 to 1800 grain then buys some Artic Silver 5 compound from ebay, under £5, apply a line corner to corner and spread with a credit card all the way accoss as thin as you can get it, the thinner the better, do this on both.

should be sorted then matey :)

Yes it will delete all your saved data.

You want to keep the data, so you need an external storage device (memory card, flash drive and so on). Copy the data on the device. If anything happens to the PS3, you still have your data on the device. When you restore the PS3, you can put back the data.

Keep us posted.

The first thing you should try is to reformat the HDD. Turn on the system then hold the power button on the front until a menu comes up on your TV. Choose to reformat the HDD. This will take several hours, but should fix you problem.

If the problem persists I suggest contacting the Playstation Technical Support at 800-345-7669

Hopefully I was able to help!

How come, PS3 sometimes turn on slowly and other times it just freezes on the main screen??

Your HARD DRIVE (aka: Hard Disk), located on the left side of the unit, is going bad. You will need to replace the HD.

When you replace your hard drive, you will need to have the latest firmware on a

usb stick. Download the firmware from the playstation official website onto a usb

stick. Once prompted by your system you will need to insert the usb stick into the

PS3. Good luck..

You will need 2.5" Sata Hard Drive.

The Hard Disk's file system is corrupted and will be restored

apart from physically reformating the hard drive yourself (taking it out and loading it on laptop or desktop and format, at your own risk), there isn't much else you can do. If the console is still guaranteed then contact sony and they will send you a new one.
If you do format it your self when you replace it in your ps3 you will need to format it again using thier options.

Hello. Your games wouldn't run slow even if you only had 1GB of memory left. The only time the hard drive will cause a game to run slow is loading a saved game. Anyother time it would have no effect.

If you have doubts, run a PS3 restore/quick format. That will clear everything, even the hard drive. OR you can put in a different hard drive.

Most likely your laser is dirty, disks are dirty or scratched or the laser is getting ready to fail.

Sony has a few fixes for this.

Visit PLAYSTATION 3 System Software Update to download and install the most recent version.

To check what version of the System Software is currently installed on your PLAYSTATION 3:

  1. From the XMB™ home menu, go to icn_settings.gif(Settings) > icn_syssettings.gif(System Settings) > [System Information].

The system will display the System Software version number.
OR During certain troubleshooting situations, it may be necessary to restore all of the PLAYSTATION 3 system settings back to their original "default" configuration.

  1. From the XMB™ home menu, go to icn_settings.gif(Settings) > icn_syssettings.gif(System Settings) > [Restore Default Settings].

  2. Once you select [Restore Default Settings], you will see a list of settings that will be restored. Scroll through them and press the icn_btnx_color.gifbutton to restore the settings.

  3. After the operation is complete, you will see the initial setup screen that appeared the first time you turned on the PLAYSTATION 3.
You will need to go through the initial setup process before you can use the PLAYSTATION 3.
IMPORTANT
The Restore Default Settings feature will erase any previously saved settings and restore all of the following settings to the default:
  • BD/DVD Settings
  • Music Settings
  • Chat Settings
  • System Settings
  • Date and Time Settings
  • Accessory Settings
  • Display Settings
  • Sound Settings
  • Security Settings
  • Network Settings
  • Internet Browser Settings
Also, do not confuse "Restore Default Settings" with the "Restore PS3 System" option (the next option down on the menu). The "Restore PS3 System" will not only restore the default settings, but it will also delete all hard disk content. (You will lose all saved content from your PS3 system's hard drive if you use "Restore PS3 System.)

OR

Power-Cycle All Network Equipment Power-cycle means to turn the networking devices OFF (i.e., unplug it from the power source), and then to turn it back ON after a set period of time. This will allow the network devices to refresh its settings.

Please power-cycle ALL of your network equipment, including any wireless access points, routers, Voice Over IP (VOIP) modems, and broadband modems for two (2) full minutes. After 2 minutes, you can turn on (or plug in) your equipment.
Hope this helps. Good luck and happy gaming!! // //
