HP2601xi says I need software when I push the scan button
I have been using this as a printer an copier for many years. I just now wanted to scan something and the screen on the printer states I need software installed. I have the original driver disk, but when I try to load it it asks if I want to uninstall the printer.

Some keyboards offer short cuts that can vary, but it would still have to be configured before it would work. I think I know why you have asked this question, and where your trying to go with this so let me cut to the chase and see if I can help you get your scanner to work. OK?
When you buy an all in one machine (which is a printer that has other options like fax or scan) and connect it to your pc, you can control the features from both sources. That means that you can push the button to scan on the printer to get it to work, or choose the scan option in the software installed on the pc to do the same thing.
How do you use the "scan" function?
If you want to scan by pushing the button on the printer, you need to configure the options in the printers menu that tell it what to do and where to send the image before it will work.
If you want to scan by clicking on a button shown on your computer screen, then you need to install the printers software to configure the options and make it work.
So which one do you want to do?
I can walk you through configuring the scan options on your printer or help you locate the software to install on your pc and explain how to use it to scan.
Regardless of the choice above, you will need the printers drivers installed and the software too. So first question would be, do you have the software and is it installed? Is the printer connected to your pc and does it work alread? Do you have the drivers/software already? Do you need them? If so, go to Dell's website and download them and install them to your computer (disconnect the printer from the pc first and dont reconnect it until told to do so during the installation) and let me know if and when your ready to continue and we will make this work ok?
Find the "menu" button on your printers keypad and push it. Use the up and down areas on the printers keypad to advance from choice to choice. Find the option that says something similar to "scan settings" . Push the "ok" button or the "enter" button on your printers keypad to open this option. Continue scrolling with the up and down arrows and using the ok or enter keys on your printer and locate the "scan to" choices. Set up your software choice for scanning text documents and pictures. Most people want to open and edit text documents in software like "Microsoft Office" in your computer. Choose a photo editing software installed in your computer to send pictures scanned on your printer to. When these settings are set and saved, turn on both the computer and printer and try scanning from printer to computer again to check and see if the problem is solved. If you experience any other issues, pleas clarify what they are and I will try and help you solve this right now before I leave for work.
Please clarify a few things for me so I can help you solve this issue.
Are you trying to scan from the printer to the computer? (pushing the scan command on the printers keypad to send the signal to the computer)
Are you trying to scan from the computer to the printer? (Using the scan options in your software by choosing "start" and then "programs" and opening your printers software to choose the scan option)
If your scanning from printer to computer (using the printers scan option on the keypad) and your getting an error code, chances are the problem is you have not set up your defaults in the printers menu yet. To scan from printer to computer, the printer needs to know which program you want your document to scan to in your computer. If its a text document, some people choose "Microsoft Word" and the scan fuction sends your item to that program and opens it for viewing on your computer screen.
There are different programs to use for each type of fax that need to be set up in advance in your printer to be able to scan from printer to computer. Send pictures to a photo editing software and choose the size and resolution you want as "default". Do the same for setting up text documents before you try and use this feature to eliminate the error code.
To configure your options to scan from printer to pc, push the "menu" button on your printer and use the up and down arrows on the printers keypad to move through the choices. Find the command similar to "scan options" and follow the prompts to set the defaults on handling text documents and pictures and then save your choices by pushing the "ok" button on the printers keypad.
Try scanning again with your computer turned on and open to the desktop. Push the scan button on the printer and see if it sends the image or document to your computer screen. It should warm up, then scan and show a preview on your screen for you to accept or reject. If this does not happen, please asnwer my questions as listed above and clarify what you see so I can help solve this issue right now.
You need to have the scanning software running first, I use Picaso that comes with some windows.. You open the scan software and tell it what you are scanning and if it sees the scanner you can scan from the computer. If the software doesn't open when you press the scan button you may not have compatible software on your computer.
The reason you're getting this is because you need to have compatible software installed on your computer.
The disk that your printer came with will come with the relevant software but you might want to check the HP website for something more up to date as they have released fixes over time.
Once you have that installed I would use the proper software to request the scan from the printer rather than trying to use the scan button on the printer itself. To be honest I have no idea why HP put that button on there as it makes things more complicated than they need to be.
Oh, also worth noting that any software that can work with TWAIN compliant scanners should be able to see and use your L7580 without anything new so it may be worth checking anything already installed on your computer to see if it already does what you want.
Hope that helps.
Have you installed the software that comes with the printer?
Once that is installed the scan button allows you to scan an image to your PC with just the one button push as opposed to opening an application on your pc getting the source and clicking on scan etc.....
Let me know if software is installed if so I have more questions to help you resolve.
