Something must be heating up and then it shuts off with a POP that comes through the speakers. What is the most likely component that would cause that? Zenith SM3247RK8 built in 1994. Sound works fine.
Re: TV comes on then shuts off in about 20 seconds
Can't say for certain being a layman and the only reference I have is a little prior experience with a similar problem. So use this advice at your own risk. hold down your menu button, if set still goes off turn on again! press menu go to antennae not cable if it stays on at this point exit out of the menu then press and hold again and when it goes to display the channel your on press the adjust and channel up buttons at same time to get to the factory set-up screen once there use the select button to scroll through its lists until you find something like AFC automatic frequency control and set that to 7 by using the select button should you see AC while scrolling check if its on 1 or 0 it should be on 1 this may also aide you in solving the problem should this not help just unplug your set for 4 hours and plug back up that should hard reset the set.

Try bypassing the set's speaker by running an external audio amp. I use my bookcase stereo for audio direct from the satellite receiver and turn the volume off on the TV. Sounds better this way! Could be the audio amp in the TV is going bad or the speaker may be bad and the TV's audio amp goes through a shut down cycle.
Install a 110v computer fan on the outside of the TV to **** the heat out. I did this and my TV has never turned off again. The TV has a poor interior fan and does not take the excessive heat out. Also the TV does not indicate a heat problem like the manual states. Need further assistance email me for pictures and suggestions on the fan
When the set is turned on, the computer senses that something is wrong and immediately shuts the set back off. The standby LED will then blink a code, a certain number of blinks, to indicate exactly why the set was shut down. It is possible that your audio output IC is shorted, as this would make a pop or strange noises in the speaker just before the set shuts down, which it does to protect your speakers from burning up. The set should be looked at by a qualified tech familiar with Sony TV's.
Does the " popping" noise come through the speakers or from the TV chassis ?
If it is coming through the speakers you could have a bad solder joint somewhere in the tuning circuit.
If it is a snapping sound coming from the chassis, then you probably have something arcing in the high voltage circiut. If this is the case then you should have it checked out since this can cause other parts to short shutting down you set completely.
