Question about PC Desktops

1 Answer

Primitive problem. I have a desktop file in my macbook that contains the documents from a long book I am writing. I bought CS4InDesign mistakenly thinking I could manage it. Now: I have one desktop INDB icon ("greatest") and next to it on my desktop I have a file called "GREATEST"" created under microsoft word (office) via mac. What I want is to drag my "GREATEST" file into the "greatest" indb file. (the files are either word docs or rtfs.) Then I want to be able to work with in design and move my files around to make a coherent list that conforms to my outline. I want to be able to move my material into something chapters and then write within those chapters.

How do I write a personal novel?

Wow, that's easy. You can go to google and type in that question and you'll get tons or results back. Today, writing a book is soooo easy and costs almost nothing. It's not like the old days where you had to have a big publishing company demanding thousands and thousands of dollars just to publish it. Nowadays, you control it all. You can actually write your document using something like Microsoft Word. Word will do spell checking for you.

After you've got it organized and written now you need to consider how to you want people to get your book. If you want them to have a paper back copy look on the internet for Print On Demand type of publishers. They are cheap and if you only need 5 books they'll print 5 books that you can throw in the trunk of your car and when you sell them you can go back and order 5 or 100 more. They'll also tell you the format you need to to have your book for them to printed. Today the standard format is an Adobe PDF Document. PDF's are good because unlike a word document, it cannot be changed by whoever gets their hands on it unless they are very computer savy.

You can go to google and in the search type "download PDF Creator". Look thru the search results and you want to download and install it from the sourceforge site. You'll see Download PDF Creater from SourceForge.net.. Click on it and download and install it. Now in order to convert that word document that you've been working on as your novel. You would open it and click File/Print and when the print window opens change the name of your printer to PDF Creator. That's all there is to it. It will show you some names that it will save it under and of course you can change it so that you can have different versions. PDF Creator works off the print function and your PDF Document will be in your My Documents Folder. Remember, you can't change the PDF, so if you need to make changes to the Novel, the changes would be made through the word document then once the changes are made you print to the PDF Creator printer.

OK and lastly I would suggest you get a website or use someone else website and upload your PDF Document Novel to the site to be sold ad an eBook. That way everybody in the world can have access to your book and download it in straight pdf form or download it to be read through their Kindle, Nook or any other ebook reading media. You'll need a shopping card so that they can pay for the book online. Use PayPal and it provides shopping carts, gives you a debit card to get your money and it's so simple.

Now about Pricing your eBook. How about making it .99 (that's right .99 cents). Think about it, who when they happened upon your site, would not pay .99 cents for the book? And just imagine how many people will come across your site once your market the site or your book is a household name. And anybody can google your book's name or the website and they will be directed to your site. The potential is unlimited. If 200 people searched and found your site today and made a purchase, you've made $200.00 today and didn't have to get outta bed.

How to create an exe book

If you've created your own ebook, its probably in PDF format which is great but submitting your PDF to ebook directories is not an easy task and You may be asked for additional file formats. Here comes the exe book. It is an executable file for windows containing your ebook.

How to create it?

1. As You have the ebook content in a format that can be edited, all you need is to copy and paste to a blank HTML page created with notepad or any web editor. Now you have your ebook as a HTML document which is not protected and can be copied and changed by anyone. So you need to protect your file from editing and changing (your contents).

2. Here comes the EXE conversion. As the executable file is much secure holder for your ebook content, you have to convert the HTML into an executable aplication (EXE file). There are many software for this, but I preffer freeware and WebSiteZip Packer from Spadix is the perfect tool for this job. With WSZ you load the HTML page with your book content, set the parameters such as window size, toolbars, security options (password and expiration date) and build exe. Built in wizard will guide you thru the process and you'll have your own exe book in minutes.

How do I transfer pictures, music etc from the old computer to the new one

Several ways. Best is to get an external hard drive - they are cheap and they offer backup.

Another way is to hook up both computers on a network. can be done without a router or an ethernet hub - switch via a "cross" cable (as opposed to "patch" cable. Please be advised that the second option is by far cheaper but it could be a pain to set up properly.

Trying to save documents to cd. not saving

Unless you have special software installed that reads the CD drive like a floppy drive, just saving won't work.
Save to your computer.
Right-click on the file name in My Documents.
Choose Send To, CD drive
Then open the CD drive in My Computer
Choose Write These Files to CD

PNY Write Protected

Check and see if you can copy and paste that file from it's location and place it on the desktop. Basically seeing if you can move that file within your PC. If this is a work computer, it might have precautions built-in to write protect it's documents. If you can move the file around in your computer then it's probably a problem with your flash drive. Can you copy anything to the drive?, such as a simple text file, music, etc. I'm also assuming that you checked the properties on the drive itself to make sure it wasn't locked. You could also try another flash drive to eliminate the possiblilty of your stick being defective.
Let me know how you do.
