On any computer, go to a command prompt.

    Type ipconfig.

For any of the adapters that are connected to the router, there will be 4 lines of numbers displayed like xxx.yyy.uuu.nnn

Write down the numbers from the last line which is the IP of the gateway. Enter that into your X-Box.

I have eveything hooked up so hat i can get on the xbox360 live but it keep sayin that i need a ip adress

You need to get your service providers' settings to be able to use the router for internet connection. If you are just using it to connect your systems for home using and you are not going to the internet, during your setup you will be require to enter an IP Address. Just enter an IP address like 196.254.100.10, subnet mask as 255.255.255.0.

Try to open ports on your netgear router, here's what you need to do:

Step 1:
Setting a Static IP Address for your 360
The first thing we need to do is give your 360 a static IP address. Turn on your 360 and go to the dashboard. Once you are at the dashboard, go over to the "System" Blade and select "Network Settings".

Under the "Network" Blade, we need to select "Edit Settings".

You will now be presented with the basic network settings for your 360. From here, you need to highlight the first section labeled "IP Settings" and select it.

From this screen, choose "Manual".

Now we will need to change all of the headings in this section 1 at a time. First will be IP addrress. Depending on what type of router you have, the settings will be differrent. Find your router brand below and enter the appropriate settings. If your router brand is not listed below, contact me, and i'll help you find the appropriate settings.
Linksys
  • IP Address : 192.168.1.250
  • Subnet Mask : 255.255.255.0
  • Gateway : 192.168.1.1
  • DNS : 192.168.1.1
D-Link
  • IP Address : 192.168.0.250
  • Subnet Mask : 255.255.255.0
  • Gateway : 192.168.0.1.
  • DNS : 192.168.0.1
Netgear
  • IP Address : 192.168.0.250
  • Subnet Mask : 255.255.255.0
  • Gateway : 192.168.0.1
  • DNS : 192.168.0.1
After you've entered all of your settings, select done, and we'll move on to the DNS settings. After selecting done, you'll be brought back to the basic settings menu. From here, you need to highlight the "DNS Settings" section and select it.

In the "DNS Settings" menu, select manual and then primary DNS server. When the entry box comes up, enter the settings listed above for your router brand and select done. A message will come up asking you to test and save your new settings. Select test live and press A. If you are currently signed into live, you will be logged out so the tests can run. At this point if you followed the instructions, everything should pass or be confirmed, and your NAT status will likely still show "moderate". This is normal. You still need to complete step 2 to open this up. We are now done with step one, so click on the the "Step 2" link to continue to the next step.
Step 2 Setup Port Forwarding on Your Router Setting up port forwarding is simple and should only take you a few minutes. During the process you're going to need to be at your computer in order to change your router's settings. The process will be a little bit differrent for each brand of router, so find the instructions for your router and follow those. As always, if you run into any problems, you can contact me using the contact info from the main page. So lets get started. Since at the moment I do not have a Linksys router, the images included below are "borrowed" from a great site, PortForward.com. They have a wealth of information about port forwarding, so if you are interested, check them out.

Once you are in, you should see a screen similar or exactly the same as the one pictured below.

From here, you need to click on the "Applications and Gaming"tab. You will see on this tab a few subheadings. Click on the subheading labeled "Port Range Forward".
The following ports must be available for Xbox Live to operate correctly:
• UDP 88
• UDP 3074
• TCP 3074

Now to the final step...testing. We get to see if all of your hard work paid off, or if it was a waste of time and i'm a bumbling idiot! Now the first thing we need to do is turn on our 360 and get to the dashboard. Navigate over to the settings blade and select "Network Settings" and select it. On the next menu, select, "Test xBox Live Connection". If you are logged into live, you will need to be logged out for the tests to run. After the tests finish running, you should have the following results:
  • Network Adapter: Wired or Wireless (Depending on the connection type used
  • Wireless Network: varies (depends on if your are connected wirelessly)
  • IP Address: Conirmed
  • DNS: Confirmed
  • MTU: Confirmed
  • ICMP: Confirmed
  • Xbox Live: Confirmed
  • NAT:Open

If your tests show everything as stated above, congratulations, you are ready to play. If not, you screwed up and need to go back and read the directions again.

Opening the NAT connection for Xbox 360 working through 2 routers

  1. How do you connect your Linksys router to Belkin router? Do you connect your Linksys router to the Internet/WAN port of the Belkin?
  2. If so, what is the Internet connection type set in your Belkin router? Is it dynamic?
  3. If the Belkin router is set to dynamic IP and if it is obtaining an IP address from your Linksys router(you may check the status page of your Belkin router and look for IP address), then you may need to forward or set that IP address as the DMZ to your Linksys router. Make sure that XBOX is still configured as the DMZ host in your Belkin
Hope this helps!

360 mtu test keeps failing

Access the routers setup page by typing 192.168.1.1 (ip address of the router) on the address bar on IE.

then on basic setup page at the bottom part of the page you will see MTU normally its on auto,
to change the value set it to manual. ask your isp what is their prefferred value for the mtu you can go as high as 1300 to 1500.
