    it's a command-line tool that checks
volumes for problems. The tool then tries to repair any that it finds. For
example, Chkdsk can repair problems related to bad sectors, lost clusters,
cross-linked files, and directory errors.Just run it, then follow the directions. I haven't done it in some time, but I am pretty sure it will reboot, or prompt you to reboot. It will do no harm.

  • Haydun Feb 16, 2009

Try it without the /r , chkdsk . Tell me what it says.

  • Haydun Feb 16, 2009

Try chkdsk /f one more time. if nothing, reboot with ctrl + alt + del

  • Haydun Feb 16, 2009

    1. Click Start, and then Run.

    2. In Open, type cmd, and then press ENTER.

    3. Use one of the following procedures: • To run Chkdsk in read-only
mode, at the command prompt, type chkdsk, and then press ENTER.

    • To repair errors without scanning the volume for bad sectors, at the
command prompt, type chkdsk volume:/f, and then press ENTER.

Note If one or more of the files on the hard disk are open, you will receive the following message:

Chkdsk cannot run because the volume is in use by another process.
Would you like to schedule this volume to be checked the next time the
    system restarts? (Y/N)

Type Y, and then press ENTER to schedule the disk check, and then restart your computer to start the disk check.

    • To repair errors, locate bad sectors, and recover readable
information, at the command prompt, type chkdsk volume:/r, and then
    press ENTER.

what are you running on your machine, and what is the make/model?

if you've got msn, you could message me. Might make this quicker. (not sure if they allow e-mail addresses to be posted)

Gateway dx4380g-uw308 keeps restarting?

Windows 8 has a neat utility that is called "Refresh Your PC". This process does not change any of your files (documents, pics, vids, music, etc.). If you upgraded your PC from Windows 8 to Windows 8.1 and your PC has a Windows 8 recovery partition, refreshing your PC will restore Windows 8. You'll need to upgrade to Windows 8.1 after the refresh has finished.

To refresh your PC

  1. Swipe in from the right edge of the screen, tap Settings, and then tap Change PC settings.
(If you're using a mouse, point to the upper-right corner of the screen, move the mouse pointer down, click Settings, and then click Change PC settings.)
  2. Tap or click Update and recovery, and then tap or click Recovery.
  3. Under Refresh your PC without affecting your files, tap or click Get started.
  4. Follow the instructions on the screen.

What I would do is to on post pressing your PC's power on begin to click over and over till you see a screen the F8 key. Go into Safe Mode or you may be able to Start Windows Normally. If this does not work then you must either do a Recovery or Run Windows disk.

Hi there,
I realise this situation could be very frustrating.
Please try restarting you PC and running it to "safe mode".
If you installed any new updates on your operating system lately they could be causing the problem.
From safe mode i think you could be able to uninstall the recent updates or you could try "system recovery", this option lets your PC go back to a date that was working correctly.

Try some of these and let me know if you have any problems!

My computer turns off when I move the mouse or the space bar after it has been in hibernation for a couple of hours or so. If I move the mouse or space bar before this time there is no problem. Any ideas...

You should disable the hibernation feature. It is utterly useless.
Using Windows XP, RIGHT click anywhere on the desktop and then select PROPERTIES.

From there, select the SCREEN SAVER tab.

In the section, "MONITOR POWER" click on the POWER button.

Go to the HIBERNATE tab.

Click on OK, etc. and close out the display properties tab.

For safety's sake, restart your PC and see how things work out for you.

There are two ways to do it.
1) when the logon screen appears, enter your password (if no, just press enter), you will be back where when you leave.

2) set the screen protection off by: clicking right mouse button on the desktop -> screen protection -->in screen protection box select none --- OK. Then, no logon screen will appear.

Try it.

.the mouse moves randomly across

If mouse is moving randomly across the screen then you may have to change the mouse or the mouse pad. If system freezes automatically that is your software problem. Please install a fresh copy of windows xp or vista whatever. Hopefully it should work . thank you.......
