Does the noise come from the right side? There is a cooling fan in that machine that makes a horrible noise.
It could also be a noise genereted from the board to the fax speaker, which could just be disconnected.
If it is on the right side let me know, I can tell you how to resolve that.

Print head go left and right non stop when the command for print is given - but does not print anything even when ask to do a nozzle check - the printhead goes al the way left and right again and again...

When was the last time the machine worked, please? What you describe sounds like clogged or dry print heads.

What happens if you try cleaning the heads not the standard once, but at least four time in a row without doing anything else in between, please? Don't try a test, don't switch off; just run the cleaning routine at least four times in straight row. (Sorry that might use a lot of ink)

Want copy ---comes up unrecoverable scan---ties up machine for 5-10 minutes---LEXMARK 5600-6600---IT also makes a knocking sound. until red light goes off and green light comes.on---1st time happened...

Unrecoverable scan error is a hardware problem. Features affected by this error are scan, copy and fax. Recommended action is to contact Lexmark technical support for assistance.

Machine thinks there's a paper jam

ok what you have done is when you have pulled the paper jam out you have either still have a small piece of paper over the sensor or you have broken the sensor itself it sounds like the later, most people tend to pull out the paper backwards against the feed rollers and sensors just below the feed rollers and it causes the sensor to fall out or break i have seen this so many times,

You have a formatter issue (motherboard) on the printer. Sounds like you took a surge possably through your telephone line.

Here's a couple things to try and re-initialize the machine.

Soft Reset: Press "Menu", then press * and # simultaniously to enter the developer menu section. Press the "> or < until until REINTFFS is displayed on the second line of the display. Press the "Check button". The machine will go through a series of checks and flash different things. About 2 to 2.5 minutes later the machine will return to ready.

If that doesn't fix it, here's the next more aggressive reset but caution as this will reset all your settings and you will have to reset up everything (language, phone numbers, country code etc..) after using.

Super NVRAM Ret:

Turn off machine, Press and hold down * and 5 while turning on machine. Continue hold down throughout the power up sequence. When PERMANENT STORAGE INT is deplayed on the display, release the buttons. When prompted, set the language and telecom region.

To set the language and telecomm region, the machine will prompt for them when they have been erased. Simply use the > or < until its correct for your language and then press the "check" button. Same process for the region. Once both have been set the machine should come to READY.

If neither of the above works, you will need a professional tech to resolve the issue and possably replace the formatter board.

Hope that helps you.

Remove the small glass pane of the left side of the scanner bed. You onlt need to remove one screw. Push the driver belt which will move the scanner to the left. It can be a little tricky to move the scanner the last little bit so you may need needle nose pliers or someone with a hook (I used a fork) to pull the scanner last little bit. Once the scanner is in the open spot where you removed the glass panel, simple take a q-tip and clean the mirror.

I did this and my machine is working just fine.
