Installing SB Sound Card Problem (by 2 users)

I have a Compaq with a built-into-the motherboard ess solo sound card. I
disabled it from the device manager in Win98 and successfully installed the
Sound Blaster 16 PCI card. Next, installed Mandrake 8.1. When I signed on
the first time as 'root' under KDE, as KDE was booting, I heard the sound
you usually get as KDE is booting. I said, "great, my SB card is working. I
then logged on as myself (not root), and got no sound. I opened harddrake
and Mandrake has detected my old built-into-the-motherboard soundcard, but
not the SB card. I went back to root, but as KDE was booting, I got no
sound this time. Any clues as to how I can get 8.1 to see my SB card?
