Greetings! Does anyone know of when the MS. POCKET PC 2003 second edition will be released? Will people with MS POCKET PC 2003 first edition have to pay for the second edition? Will there be a site to download the Second edition? Will there be a problem loading it in to a Pocket PC that has the first edition? Also, will the site work well with present Anti-virus software (I have Norton Anti-virus 2003, Version 10)?
I have a Toshiba e755. Will Second edition work with this version? I would appreciate ANY input and advice? Hey, Microsoft Experts!...What do you folks have to say? I checked out the MS Mobile site and count not find one place where the full info and download is available.
Anyone have some input and perhaps a link to the second edition? Thank you in advance. -- Lawrence
(in message <Fiuec.210$ I agree that it would be great if there would be upgrades for any device, no matter what age, but that isn't true. Other than with the desktop, the hardware and software in a Pocket PC are highly integrated. There's one supplier offering the OS (Microsoft) and there's one supplier offering the hardware and device specific drivers (the OEM). Since MS will be creating the OS anyhow it's the OEM who will have to decide if it's worth the time and effort to develop their part of the upgrade. As you're probably well aware, providing an upgrade is quite expensive so they might decide not to upgrade hardware they're fading out.
Personally, this is one of the reasons why I like HP, since so far they've offered upgrades for most of their devices (not the entry level line of 1900 though) to the next version of the OS. I don't necessarily expect them to support two generation old hardware, even though I'd find it extremely nice if they did.

Been a mobile device person from the early sharp days, still think its the future and said so to VP windows team last time in Redmond. Don't think he appreciated my comments, anyway. What will kill it is the inconsistency of various vendors in supplying the base platform and their extensions or not. Its like the old day with PC with every vendor having a slightly different flavour.
You really don't know what the differences are until you buy the bloody device, very frustrating. I bought the first HP Jornada 680e thinking I was buying an upgrade path, see previous grumble. It still works and is great when travelling but none of current software will run on it. Talk about stifling a product in the marketplace.
I haven't been able to get a backup from one device to work with another, eg. HP Jornado end of the process. I constantly push PPC to my executives but until the integration and consistency improves it isn't going to make it in large-scale enterprises except in niche pockets (so to speak). Enjoy, Wayne

(in message < That will be up to the OEM that build your Pocket PC to decide. They will roll out the upgrades.
That will be up to the OEM that build your Pocket PC to decide. They control the upgrade path. They might offer a free upgrade, or charge money for it.
That will be up to the OEM that build your Pocket PC to decide. They decide on how to distribute the ROM build. Previous experiences show that this is mostly done by CD-ROM distributions.
Nobody has it yet (apart from MDC beta builds), so nobody knows.
Nobody has it yet (apart from MDC beta builds), so nobody knows. It *is* advisable to switch off any Anti Virus program when doing a ROM upgrade though.
That's for Toshiba to decide.

WM2k3 is scheduled to be released by the end of spring early summer. Upgrades will be dependant on the manufacturer of the device. Some may charge, some may not, some may not offer at all. As for the software, I'm not sure what impact it will have on current applications.
Again, upgradeability is dependent on the manufacturer
