After pushing power button, it resumes windows, then the screen goes black& blank, instead of opening the desktop with the icons. I can still open Dell Media Direct & even go online by its means, but there are no icons leading to other programs on the computer, no desktop at all, no entry password.

Can you go to safemode and check if you are able to see the icons.
Did you run a virus scan lately. If not you can try that.

The screen on your laptop goes black after every few seconds.
It resumes after a mouse-click or after a key-press.
Click on Start --> In search bar, type power options and press Enter.
"Select a power plan" window will be opened.
Click on "Change plan settings" next to "Balanced (recommended)".
In "Turn off the display", select "Never" from the drop-down menu under both the options "On battery" and "Plugged in".
Now click on "Save changes" button.
