Some people mistakenly think of glass crafts as a really old fashioned type of craft ie lots of little glass animals that your grandparents used to have on their sideboard. But glass crafts and in particular glass engraving can be absolutely stunning, allowing artists to blend both their creative ideas with a very technical talent.
Different types of glass engraving;
1. Intaglio - this style of glass engraving involves cutting images and inscriptions into the glass through abrasion.
2. Stipple or Drypoint - these styles abrade the surface of the glass, using small diamond tipped burrs.
3. Sandblasting - abrasive is sprayed through a sandblasting gun on to the glass through stencils which produces impressive inscriptions.
There are many courses for glass blowing and glass work but it's not as common to find glass etching courses, but if you come across one or an exhibition of glass etchings, its well worth checking out.

it sounds like you got a dead short under the glass top , it could be a wire that shorted or some type of bug that got into the elements , I would even open the top with out pulling the plug out of the wall ,if it is 10 years old mite not be worth fixing but it should be looked at before you decide Frank
