Question about Whirlpool 21.0 cu. ft. Top Freezer Refrigerator with IceMagic Plus Ice Maker

1 Answer

Compressor keeps running, and really noisy, seems to be working though, when thermostat set to off the compressor shuts off, so the thermostat should be good right, could it be a low charge, or just a bad compressor going out, fridge is from 1990.

I have cleaned up the coils as well as i could now how would i go about troublshooting the defrost system and what temps. should i be running in the freezer part. thanks for the info by the way.

Is the condenser area clear of all dust accumulations?Clean that area up real good first.

2nd, the defrost system may be acting up. It is unlikely you would have 12 degrees in the freezer if the defrost system was initiating, or not finishing cycle, but I would check this first.

We need to know what the refrigerator and freezer temperatures are in order to determine if there are any issues.

It is possible it could be a low charge, but we need to look at all other possible causes first.

Other than the compressor running quite a bit, what other issues are you having with the refrigerator?

I agree with you its is one of those problems you mention or both,so lets look at cost first:under new EEU regulations an engeneer has to drain you old gas from your fridge back into a special containor he will charge you for disposing it, then he will charge you for finding your leak/s and repairing it or them and last he will tell you what you already know your compressor is on its way out.I want you weigh up the costs of repair which im sure will be quite substantional to the price of a new or good second hand fridge your call ,.hope this helps you.adrian

My magic chef model ctn1911gew is not working properly makes a clicking sound and is not cold at all and fan on bottom is not running. please help

Are we talking about the fan near the compressor? It is important to know if the compressor itself is running. If there is a loose connection to the compressor via the start/over load relay (normally attaches directly onto the compressor), or if the start/over load itself is bad the compressor will not run. It will click trying to turn on untill the over load gets hot Check to see if your compressor is really hot. Could be bad start/over load relay or bad compressor. Try unplugging your frig for say 30 min then, with your hand on top of a cool compressor, plug the frig back in and see if compressor smoothly vibrates for at least 5 min without becoming very hot or shutting off even though fan continues to run. The fact your fan is not running could itself be the problem. It is needed to keep the freon, and the compressor cooled.

Your model has a mechanical thermostat inside the control panel. I believe you have something else going on like a bad fan, start relay, capacitor. Something is causing the compressor to struggle to keep up and in turn causing the compressor to short cycle. If the thermostat has no control over run time then something like I explained is causing the problem. Here is a parts manual=> ED5VHEXVB04 Contact me if you would like my help, Thanks Sea Breeze

The fridge is not cooling!! The motor and fan are both making noises as though they are working and the freezer is working perfectly. I have turned the thermostat up to the maximum but still no cool air.

If there is no cooling on the fridge but the freezer is cooling then the compressor and gas pressure seems good. So to check the set for blocks in the ducts we must shut off the fridge.Keep it off while you clean and check the evaporator for frost. If frost is seen it is a good indication as the compressor is working with sufficient gas within.
Now after about 6 hours plug in the fridge to start. Observe cooling to happen in about one hour and ice to from under three hours.
Earlier make sure that the thermostat was set to normal mode for freezer and fridge.
However if Ice forms then observe the fridge for about 24 hours for cooling to continue and the fridge to cut off . If not the auto defrost timer, or the thermostat must be checked.
The fan making noise can be due to frost build up .If defrost timer works but frost keeps forming check while the compressor shuts if the heaters are working, check continuity of the heaters.
Do not set thermostat up to max but keep it to normal .So try this test from the outside and make your observations so that we come to the solution.

Defrosted it and now when plugged in, not getting cold.

If the compressor is running then it ought to cool. If not shut if down once again wait for few hours and keeping the thermostat in the normal position switch on.
If there is no cooling check if the compressor is working, If the motor speed seems dull check for capacitor being weak, gas pressure being down.
Though it seems strange that a defrosted fridge does not cool and we must suspect the compressor..

Candy Fridge Freezer CVC 324AK approximately 5 years old which is running all of the time and freezing up

If your fridge is running all the time and you are not hearing it shut off you must first of all check on the thermostat, the lines to the thermocouple. Then start the fridge and check if the compressor stops, if not shut off and reduce the settings on the thermostat. if the fault recurrs then try to change the thermostat and see byt setting the thermostat low if the compressor shuts off. Also check for the wiring to the timer and the allied circuits. I amsure you can get to this fault, take help if it is beyond you, but keep this advice in mind. Good day

No motor sound, no cooling fridge

Raise your cooling knob to higher levels - just to troubleshoot raise it to maximum and see if the compressor runs. When your compressor cycles off, so does your evap fan, it should not be spinning ! Keep the thermostat to highest position, this is to rule out thermostat poblems, otherwise you will need to call for service and check your control board and compressor relay/run capacitor, etc. More likely a therm out of calibration or set too low.

My sub-zero 695 motor keeps running, very noisy..

If it is one with the compressor on top . Check the coils up top . You may find that they need cleaning because it sound like it's unable to cool enough to satisfy the thermostat therefore it runs all the time trying to.

Yes you are right the thermostat is not responding to switch off the compressor at the desired temperature setting. It stay "always on" position. Replace the thermostat to rectify this problem....................sodeep
PS: low refrigerant gas could also contribute to aggravate this problem, so have it checked too by the repairman.
