Re: I Have a Compaq V3000 Laptops. The display is very...
It miight be the backlight for this unit. It all depends on whether the screen came with the backlight. There is a remote chance that the display circuitry on the motherboard is faulty too. Try to plug a monitor into the VGA port and check to see if it is dim there too.

Since an external monitor works, it is the display's backlight or inverter board.
If you were experiencing discoloration in the screen (pinkish lower light hues) before it failed, that would indicate a CCFL backlight issue. If the screen suddenly went dim rather than a slow degradation, the inverter would be indicated.
In either case, a technician in your area should be able to help. Evaluate to see if the repair is cost-effective.
First see if any monitor will work, plugged in at back? If works, check, just isn't been LCD monitor has been disabled by a key command, then if NOT work, it is probably Video card. OR actual LCD, OR the LCD power supply and/or Inverter? may also be bad connection to MB? Or Broken ribbon in lid, or case. Faulty sleep open/close LCD switch? Try those.
You may have a defective CCFL backlight, it may have the following symptom: Screen flashes on and off or displays reddish pink hue. Picture stays on in red and slowly be come normal. Picture flickering with dim display or appear black. Picture flickers on and off. All these symptoms indicate that the LCD backlight lamp (CCFL Lamp) has reached the end of the life and all you need to do is replace the CCFL lamp. Dim image and/or dark display on the laptop's LCD screen indicates a faulty LCD backlight. It could be the inverter that supplies high voltage to the CCFL lamp or it is the CCLF lamp is nearly burnt out, this is the most likely case. The inverter can be replaced easily but the CCLF lamp is more time consuming and requires soldering skills. Sounds like the auto-dim in the BIOS is set too low. Fortunately the Compaq R3000 allows you to adjust the brightness right from the keyboard. Hold down the [FN] function key while tapping the [F8] key will brighten the screen, while [FN]-[F7] will dim it. The settings are different for running on AC power and battery, so you must do each individually.
