Question about Cobra 29 WX NW ST 40-Channels Base CB Radio

1 Answer

It's like she's "charging".

My Cobra comes on good at first but then doesn't transmit or receive after about 5min. The weather band still works and all her lights work. If I turn it off and on again, nothing happens. But if she sits for a while with the power supply on, it's like she's "charging". Then she'll give me another 5min. Tried other mics and I'm stumped.Any ideas? Any help would be sweet! Thanks!!!

SOUNDS LIKE A COLD SOLDER JOINT OR A BAD COMPONENT WHEN IT WARMS UP THATS WHEN IT STARTS ..TAKE OFF THE COVER SO THAT YOU CAN SEE THE SOLDER SIDE OF THE BOARD PUT POWER TO THE RADIO AND WHEN IT WARMS UP AND SHUTS DOWN TAKE A LITTLE PIECE OF WOOD OR PLASTIC AND PROBE ALL THE SOLDER CONNECTIONS TO CHECK FOR A COLD SOLDER JOINT IT MAY BE GRAY IN COLOR MAY NOT.. SEE IF IT GOES ON AND OFF.. IF SO RESOLDER THAT SOLDER JOINT.......IF THIS DOES NOT WORK ....PICK UP SOME FREEZE SPRAY AND SPRAY IT ON THE COMPONENT'S ON THE OTHER SIDE OF THE BOARD THIS IS WHAT A SERVICE PLACE WILL DO IF THAT DOES NOT WORK NOW BRING IT TO A SERVICE AND LET THEM SCRATCH THERE HEAD GOOD LUCK

Problem no squelch noise or speaker like its muted, but can hear weather ok shows receiving and ant ok

Since the radio cannot transmit on Weather bands, there is no need for the radio to detect if it is transmitting when receiving weather.
In CB mode (on CB channels) the radio will mute when transmitting. So... a guess is that it is muting, or transmitting all the time in CB mode. Check for a mic problem by removing the Mic from the radio ... if it receives CB with no mic connected, then there is an issue with the mic. Otherwise, unless the unit is in PA mode (public address mode) it is likely something internal and beyond the scope of this service.

Check and be certain you are not on the weather band. if you are you can not transmit and if you are not set to the proper weather station you will hear nothing. Sound like your problem.

I have cobra 29 LTD that will power up, but wont talk or receive.

First make sure the switch on the front is not set to PA or Weather if the unit has the weather featurre.

Then look to see if the receive/transmit meter is showing any movement in either mode.

You had a Connex board installed? I bet that is wired wrong or a wire came off in the process

Do it yourself installation or a "expert"?

Check the swr's. Or there are vertical circuit boards that get loose. We do not charge to look at any cb.

Hi, my name is John. Try putting the unit on PA and PA speaker plugged in the back, try another cobra mic on it, if that does not do it, then we will look at the audio chip. Let me know how it goes, I will post the tools needed and procedure here. Hope this was very helpful....Rate this solution on the four thumbs-up....... John

My cb transmits with a very weak signal and won't recieve anything. The weather band recieves with no problems. I couldn't even pick up a signal on my SWR meter but a friend of mine tested it on his home...

There are a few things that could be wrong. If there is something wrong with the mic, you may not hear anything on the radio. but weather will work.

Other then that, the receive section of the radio could be blown.

Try a new mic, and if it doesn't work, then there is something blown in the radio. It needs a tech.
