Check Maxtor's web site, or simply this one:

http://eshop.macsales.com/Tech/manuals/idehdsettings/Maxtor72.pdf

It depends on your jumper style (see diagram in pdf above), but generally it will be the first column you want to jumper to select the drive as master.

SOURCE: jumper settings

Hi

If you look on the top of the hard drive you will see a diagram of the positions you need, master setting is nearest the IDE connector.

Press and hold that key during the boot up process to enter BIOS the scroll down to advanced bios features press enter change your first boot device to IDE-1 means Pri slave escape then press f10 to save to cmos to restart
you will have to have master with slave set up
you can find the jumper location next to the power on a hard drive and the settings for plastic jumper location is usually printed on the top of a hard drive
IDE-0 means Pri master ?
IDE-1 means Pri slave ?
IDE-2 means Sec master ?

I am installing a new WD3200AAJB HD in a Dell Dimension 4550. This is the only HD in the system. There are also 2 CD drives and a floppy drive. I used the jumper settings the drive came with which pins...

Reinstall your old hard drive as master and install the new hard drive as slave.

Here is the link to jumper settings from Westrn Digital;

http://wdc.custhelp.com/cgi-bin/wdc.cfg/php/enduser/std_adp.php?p_faqid=1540&p_created=#jumper

If you've got your jumper settings wrong and installed your os on the 127 GB section of the 320 GB Hard drive and you change jumper settings and then you have problems you may need to reinstall the old hard drive as master and the new hard drive as slave. Reformat the new hard drive as 320 GB, and as a bootable drive. You can either do a disk copy from old to new or reinstall your os on the 320 GB drive. Please let me know how this goes. How to set jumpers in an old quantum fireball Lct20 HD. The master mode needs to be "jumpered"

Please look on top of your HD and u will see a table that show u the HD jumper setting (Master, Slave or Cable Select).
Then look again the rear side of the HD and u will see some pin that locate beside the power input of the HD, that is the jumper pin.

Now set the jumper according to your requirement refer to the jumper setting table just now. To set it just unplug the jumper (look like a U shape contactor covered with plastic) and plug it back according to the requirement. Sometime u may lost the jumper contactor, nevermind just use what ever conductor cable to roll between the two pin and make sure the pin is connected that all.

Cannot get 2 IDE devices to show in bios.

Does the computer have two IDE channels? If so set the Maxtor HDD as master on the primary channel and the DVD drive as master on the secondary channel. Also right click on My Computer, left click on Manage and left click on Disk Management and see if the drives show up there. Also check the boot order in BIOS.

Your solution

That depends on the type of HD you have...Mine is a Maxtor 3 1/2" ATA 60 gig...On Maxtor's web site you can print the jumper settings for the type and style of the the HD you have...A side note on Maxtor's ATA HD's, the jumper setting for 'Master' on all styles would be the last VERTICAL pin setting on the LEFT.
I'm sure if you have another type (Seagate, etc.) they will have setting's on their web-site.
Don't worry if you get it wrong you won't damage the HD, it just won't work.
Hope this helps!
