Question about Dometic Rooftop RV Air Conditioner

1 Answer

Ammonia smell when Dometic Air Comditioner is on

When the rooftop Dometic Air conditioner compressor kicks on, there is a STRONG smell of something like ammonia. This has been going on for several months, yet the unit cools well. We took it in for service, but the tech said it was probably something in our duct that had died! We had the ducts cleaned, had the unit cleaned, yet nothing was found and the smell is no less intense when the compressor kicks on. What do we do?

Sounds like you have an old unit and it has a leak , the real old units where filled with ammonia as the gas

I had the same problem, make sure your dump tank valves are closed, as the ac draws air into the cabin through the sewer pipes if they are open and seem to be coming fom the ac unit.

Bad run capacitor or bad compressor. If you hear an occasional click from the compressor try a new run cap and then a hard start kit. Otherwise it's more economical to purchase a new unit.

Shut it off and get it checked. Ammonia is dangerous as I am sure you are aware. Ammonia smell is an indication of a leaking cooling unit. Time for a new fridge. Sorry.

When I turn on my ac the compressor will not kick in and I get a burnt smell like wires or rubber burning. what might cause this?

Loose wiring/high/low voltage may create wire burning. Please call repairman to check and rectify. Don't use as it is. Thanks.

I have my dometic Rooftop ac unit. The heatstrip/fan run perfectly but when I turn on the ac...the fan runs good but when the compressor kicks on it just hums.

The compressor coming on does make a slight "humming" sound which is normal. Is the unit cooling properly? Do you think it is louder than before?

Compressor won't kick off

What happens when started in just fan mode? Sounds like relay stuck.

Blowing hot air. Compressor not kicking on. Where

Possibly three things, either a thermostat problem, starter relay/capictor, or a bad overload protector not closing after an overload. The starter relay should be behind a black box located on the side of the compressor.

Check at the compressor terminals between the Red and the terminal for the overload protector to see if you are getting power to the compressor on startup.
