Does anyone have any information on the Umax 4000 UFB scanner? It's listed
as a " single pass, USB, 8.5"x 14" with 1200x2400 pdi and 36/42bit
(extendable) color". Any and all info would help.
Luck to you all, Craig

At last - the first comment from a Umax Astra 4000U user on this newsgroup.
I'm also keen to know how it goes with 120 negs and slides. Here's hoping
you get the Trans adapter soon.
Cheers

Ulrich,
To scan a negative you must first place a piece of clear developed film
( the same type as you are scanning ) on top of the calibration window.
Remember to remove it, before you scan positives (slides) and
photographs.

Hello again,
Umax 4000U IS a true 1200dpi single pass scanner. BTW: have a look at UMAX
Germany, there??s a user??s board (german) about the various models.

I??m testing a 4000U since 3 day??s:
After several minor problems concerning my (old) Win 95b with 2 USB-Updates,
IRQ-conflicts with soundcard on a good old P55T2P4 - he did his job !!!
Image quality and sharpness is better than the 1220S ??s, but the speed
hopefully will be improved by better drivers. With the UTA scans from negs or
diapositives are very clear and sharp, but the build in neg-converter adds a
lot of noise to the images. Perhaps that a thing concerning only my
test-negatives, please give some further info??s.
After all: A good scanner with a difficult installation on older PC??s with a
poor "Vista-Scan"-software !
price: about DM 770,- with transparency adapter

Larry ,
I guess What I was looking for is someone that has the scanner, to get their
opinions good or bad. The only info that I've seen on this scanner has been
from the sites that are selling the unit. Sometimes not the most objective,
unbiased people to listen to, as I'm sure you've also seen. Can you tell me
is it a "true" single pass scanner at the 1200x2400 ? Or is it as the Epson
1200, as I have read on other sites 600 with twin passes/electronics giving
the 1200 dpi? Any information would be a great help.. I really don't want to
shell out 325.00 or so if it's mostly hype.
Thanks for the reply.

Craig,
What is it you wish to know? I can't find anything wrong with it, if
that is what you are worried about. The color is great, and the scans
are sharp. I call it my plastic PowerLook III. I have not been able
to scan any slides, or negatives yet, because all of the transparancy
adapters are on back order.
