Dodge has a safety feature on there trannys. Its called limp home mode. If the computer detects a problem with the transmission, it will eather put it in 1st or 2nd and not change just to let you get out of the road or home if your near. But when you restart the car i will reset till it detects the problem again. But for as what the problem is it will be hard to say. With computer trannys you can have it hooked up and scanned for error code.

The tranny wont shift up in drive from third at about 40 mph the tranny starts to hesitate stutter. already changed oil filter and speed solonoid

just by your description (detailed) id say it could go a few directions ??4 a cause, one way is the 40 mph is near the speed that overdrive is engaged (42 mph) these do sometimes have problems inside them (gears ) also the stutter you mention is sort of an indication that your torque converter didn't lock up or is locking/.unlocking this is an indication of a immanent torque converter failure , if car was made past 2001 then chances are good it has some kind of transmission control system that could log a fault to help you look for a cause like a faulty speed sensor or something , ck your codes !!

Not shifting after 40 mph, could it be something other than tranny issues??

Sounds to me like the car is in limp mode. This happens when the cars computers see something very wrong, and locks the transmission into second gear. This would explain the boggy feeling at take off and the limited speed. You should definitely get your check engine light checked out to see what code is there. Only then can you pursue the problem further.

Need to fix the slipping on an automatic transmission

change the trany fluid and filter. get some lucas transmission treatment and put it in before you put your trany fluid in. after all fluids are in and everything is together start the vehicle and hold foot on brake and go through the gears it might slip a lil the first 5 min of driving or until fluid works through trany.

Gas relay

The only things that hold you back are:

A totally clogged gas filter
A blocked exhaust converter
A slipping transmission

Rare to fall back to a slower speed

Slips out of 1st and 5th

Have you checked your transmission fluid level and your transmission filter? That's a common cause of slippping.

The car slipps or jerks in the low gears

you should go to a transmission guy they have computers that will find the problem and i think that its free... but i think that your transmission needs to be rebuilt, theres a lot that can go wrong with them things

Will not accelerate past 40 mph

simple tune up could do it, or a bad MAF or MAP sensor could give similar problems

Can only get up to 30/40 mph

  • You can check the oil on your transmision
But more likely a faulty selector you are gonna have to take it to a service agent sorry
