Question about Mountain Bike Bicycle Derailleur Hanger Adjustment Tool

Rear mountain bike derailluer stops working,then suddenly starts

Sometimes when I jiggle it,it then starts working again.I was wondering whats wrong with it and how I can fix it so it continuasly works instead of intemitently. The bike is 8 months old.

Depending on how much you use the bike. you may have to replace or re-aline the gear cable that runs through the bike.

Nothing is wrong, it's just a different kind of valve called a presta valve instead of the more common schrader valve. Just stop by the bike shop and ask them to pump it up for you or if you want, to adapt the rim to fit a schrader valve. If you do that have them put in the new inner tube.

Rear derailluer bolt missing how and where do i reattach it?


Depends on which bolt is missing and what derailleur your referencing.

If you no longer have the bolt then I would suggest taking the bike or derailleur into a bike shop and have them provide the proper bolt to complete your derailleur. They can also advise for your specific derailleur how to reattach. Not all derailleurs work the same.

To use Sram Red Shifters with such a wide range rear cassette requires a Sram 10-speed MTB rear derailleur such as an XX or X.0, it will work without problems with your red shifter.

Because it is a road bike, i suggest leaving the road crankset and front derailleur in place. If you need low gearing I suggest a compact front crankset.

If you need to use a mtb crankset, attept to use the road front derailluer with it.

The shifter will not move into the # 3 range on the front derailluer, problem is in the shift lever


Check the limit screws. It is likely that the limit screw is adjusted to keep the movement limited to the first two chainrings. If that is not the problem, alignment or damage may be the source.

I am trying to fix a Huffy Blackwater bicycle (15 speed). The rear derailleur is missing. Can I use a 6 speed derailleur from a Next bike? Can I disable the indexing of the Huffy (Falcon) shifter? Thanks


You can use the 6 speed rear derailleur with no problems. The 5-spd shifter does not need to be disabled, as it will work just fine.

The shifter controls the rear derailleur, telling it how far to move. The rear derailluer just follows what is dictated, so there is no real difference mechanically between the 5spd and 6spd derailleurs, only in the shifter.

If you wanted to make the bike 6spd, you would have to change the shifter and gears along with the derailleur.

I just bought my bike at wal-mart and I didnt get a manual. Iam having a hard time changing gears


I'm assuming you bought a mountain type thing with 12 -18 gears on it, It is easy enough to shift it, as long as it is it working right, They should have set the stops on both shifters front and rear for you. They might be a little off, but when in low gear rear, your chain should not go over the limit and fall into the spokes. Like wise in high gear, should not fall off the cluster in high. The front is the same, the chain should stop at the sprockets smoothly, and not crunch into gear. My bike shifts like a car, 1,2,3,etc. Your front sprockets, unless you are mountain climbing, leave it on the big sprocket, about 46 teeth, and get used to running that high gear up front, now the rear sprocket, you start off in low, biggest one, and move your shifter while you are peddling, 2nd, then 3rd, and when you come to a light or have to stop, downshift to low again in the rear and you'll be ready to take right off. There are a lot of people out there who don't know how to shift these things and they leave them in one gear and pedal air. Hope this helps.

The plastic is to stop the chain from touching the spokes, it cannot cause this problem, either the chain is not on a sprocket correctly or the rear cluster(sprockets) is not working.
Some spray lube may help, but if it is new, take it back to the shop.
