Bearing failed on sears front load washer, I think.
Machine is about 3 years old. I can't find the manual.
Complaints.com for my model said another machine that sounded like a thunderstorm during the spin cycle turned out to be a failed bearing.
I turned my contol to off to stop the spin cycle. After circling around the dial on all the off's the door opened and I removed the clothes. My wife said it was not overloaded and what looked like a small load to me was just small items, socks, tshirts etc. I ran the spin cycle empty and it made some noise that was unusual per my wife but not the thunderstorm we heard before.

Re: bearing failed on sears front load washer, I think.
Usually it will be the bearings and that's not good. It usually cost about the same as a new machine. If we do a repair like that for a machine that is under warranty it takes 2 guys about 2 hours to do and the parts alone are ~$800.00 The whole basket and back drum need to be replaced. Very often they fail because the customer did not use "HE" soap. Regular soap really foams and that get's into the bearings. I know the manual says it prefers HE soap but I wish they would point it out better because the machines use so little water, regular soap and too much of it will kill those machines. Sorry I don't have better news for you my friend but I have seen a lot of them go out and unfortunatly it's a cost prohibitive repair :(

How old is your machine? Mine was doing the same thing. After doing some research online (and a visit from a Sears technician), I found out that the bearings died on on the drum. The Sears technician told us it
was a combination of the type of soap being used (non HE), and the
amount of soap being used per load that contributed to the unit's
failure. I wish someone had explained that to us 7 years ago when we
bought the machine. Appearently there are enzymes in the soap that will
eat away at the rubber washer that protects the bearings. There are
less of these enzymes in HE laundry soap, thats why it's recomended for front loading machines.I think the HE soap will still eventually
cause this machine to fail, but it would take a little longer than 7 years (maybe 10 or 12). By then it's probably time to by a new
machine anyways. We bought a new machine because it would cost over $500 CND to get the old one fixed. We ended up with a Frigidaire Affinity (FAFW3577KN).
This type of issue may also be related the the water level switch. If the water level switch fails it can cause the washer to only spin slowly because the CCU thinks there is too much water in the machine.

Ours started knocking several months ago and then progressed to a high pitched sound when in the spin cycle. I manually turned the drum and heard and felt a bearing roughness. I lifted the drum assembly and felt a fair amount of play, which I think the initial knocking noise came from. On the sears web site a new rear drum mount cost 293.00. Today we went and bought a LG model wm2455hw at Home depot, on sale until 2/20/08. I couldn't see paying to repair a machine that only lasted four years.
