I had a similar problem. A replacement Westinghouse 3-4 wire 3-speed replacement switch from Home Depot, part # 77020, is a multi-pole that did not work with my ceiling fan. There was no "off" position. I found the correct replacement switch, sold under the "Harbor Breeze" name, part # 033905, which is a single pole switch, at Lowe's, at a better price!

The Westinghouse 77020 switch functions as follows:

Position ' Connections
1) L+2+3
2) L+1+3
3) L+1+2
4) L+1+2+3

The correct functions of a 3-speed fan switch, or at least in the case of a Hunter
ceiling fan, are as follows:

Position ' Connections
1) L+1
2) L+2+3
3) L+3
4) L

So either you can buy a different switch from a different manufacturer, or you can do like I did & modify the Westinghouse switch by opening it, removing the #3 connection, & shaving down the plastic housing underneath the metal contacts for the #3 wire. The reason you do this is so you can get that connection to sit as low in the housing as the terminal marked L. Then you must modify the piece in the center. It has 3 long brass terminals & one short one. Now remove the plastic barrel inside the brass terminals. Using a pair of dikes, cut the small tab off. Hold the terminal piece so it looks like a "C" & cut the top & the side terminals down halfway. Now just put it back together wiring it as follows:

L = GREEN
1 = GRAY
2 = BROWN
3 = BLACK
It should now work if done correctly.

You can find a switch with an off position and change it out.probably was meant to be controlled from a wall switch,and the off position on the speed selector would be confusing.(When you would turn the wall switch on but no fan).

I have experience a similar problem.Home depot has different kinds of 3 speed fan switches at different locations. I found westinghouse 77020 at one location and a westinghouse 77021 at another. Fortunately the 77020 worked for me. But for a reference Westinghouse has 3 types 77020, 77021 and 77023.

I have a harbor breeze ceiling fan on a dimmer

You have 3 options. You can connect the fan blue and the fan black to the red ceiling wire. Then you will need to control the fan and light with the strings. The wall switch will turn off everything. Option 2 is make sure that there is a switch wired to the black ceiling wire. If there is a switch I would check to make sure the switch is working. Option 3 is to purchase a remote control unit for both and leave the wall switch to shutoff the whole unit. Hope this helps.

I have a westinghouse switch # 77075 the wires coming from the fan are violet,yellow,orange and black. have wired it several ways without success.

If you have not already done so I would use the black wire as the line. I assume you have a black,white,and bare copper line feeding this fan.Bare copper is the ground so take it to ground screw on the fan.Go black to black then one at a time try each of the other three to to white neutral line.Each time switch fan through all positions. Hope this helps you. Thank you.

Old fan switch has 4 wires, new one has 3. A Ceiling fan light switch is for the fan, not the light, correct?

You have 2 questions:
1) Pull-chain Switch question:
You need a fan switch with 4 wires.
http://www.homedepot.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?storeId=10051&productId=202191016&langId=-1&catalogId=10053&PID=500871&cm_mmc=CJ-_-500871-_-10368321&cpncode=00-29062147-2&AID=10368321&cj=true&srccode=cii_9324560&locStoreNum=577
Your pull-chain switch has one wire that connects to Hot from wall switch. And then one wire for each of the 3 speeds.
Best way to start is to test the old switch with continuity tester.

Compare results with following image of 3-wire switch for general reference:

2) Ceiling fan pull chain switch is for the fan only.

I have a Hampton Bay ceiling fan. I bought Westinghouse 77021 to replace the fan switch. I have black, white, yellow and blue wires inside the fan's case. Where should I connect these wires? Jane

Hello. Yhe most common combination for this wire combination is: L - White, 1- Black, 2 - Blue, 3 - Yellow . However this is assuming your 77021 (the fan) has three speeds and the pullchain has four wires. Here's a link to some very good troubleshooting advice: http://www.ceiling-fans-n-more.com/ceiling-fan-pullchain-replacement-and-repair.php
and a link to Diagrams: http://www.hurontel.on.ca/~taitg/pages/cfan.html

If by a 3-way switch, you mean a switch with 4 steps of brilliance: off, low, medium, and high when used with a 3-way bulb. The black wire of the switch is connected to incoming power wiring hot wire. Most often also black. The red switch wire connects to the center contact of the lamp socket. The blue wire connects to the small pin connection that is physically between the center connection and the screw shell of the lamp socket. The screw shell is connected to the incoming white wire of the house wiring.

Most likely the color codes are not the same as your original. There should be one wire that is common to each position (except off) If you have a continuity tester or ohm meter, test the new switch before connecting. Start with the black wire and one of the others. Keep pulling the switch until it goes on. Then try the black wire and a different wire. Keep pulling the chain until another goes on. If you can do this for all three, then the black wire should be connected to the black wire in the outlet box to your house wiring. Then connect the remaining three. If your speeds are not in the correct order, you can exchange connections until you have low, med , high. off. The black wire may not be the common wire and if not start over using say the red wire, and test to each of the remaining three.

Typically the old and new switches have no relative relationship to each other .. One way to figure this out is shut off the power and then using the black power wire attach each speed wire to it and turn power back on to observe the speed .. mark the wire with the speed 1, 2, 3, .repeat this untill all the wires are identified .. . then you can put the wires on the appropriate terminations on the new switch ..

Changing the 3 speed switch on my westinghouse ceiling fan

If you are careful and take the hot coming into the fan from the power source and connect it to the colored wires one at a time, you will be able to find which one is high, med. and low. Then connect them. Hot in is L, 1 is low, 2 is med, 3 is high
