I just purchased the AK31 with the Athlon XP1800. The shop where I purchased this installed a Volcano II heatsink saying the Volcano 6 would not fit. I am not really happy with the Volcano II. Seems to be running hot. 50 degrees celcius with no real load. And i have great flow through my SupeoMicro 750-A case. Which heatsink is the best, but one that will fit with the chipset fan sitting so close to the cpu? My old Slot A Athlon ran a cool 29 degrees celcius in the same setup. Thanks for any suggestions.
I went back to the shop yesterday and explained that I was not satisfied with the cooling of my processor. Of course they insisted that the Volcano 6 would not fit, so I took one out of the box and tried it on the motherboard on display in the store. The only problem I saw was the fact that it sat really close to the chipset fan, although I could slightly push the fan mount out of the way and it worked fine. I had one of the techs come out and we looked at it together and he seemed to think the same thing. It should be no problem. Brought it home, installed it and it is cooling better but I think I am going to get a bigger fan to help bring the temps down some more before I try any overclocking. My board temps are 27 degrees celcius and the processor is running around 42 degrees celcius. I think a little stronger fan will help this even more. I am not really worried about noise since my box is already noisy as it is! I have installed some pretty serious case cooling fans to help keep the internal temps down. Having 2 ATA100 drives, 3 SCSI drives, a DVD drive and a CD burner my box gets pretty warm. That and a GeForce 3 and you can see where my concerns about heat come in to play. Thanks everyone for the replies. By the way check out the Alpha cooler here. I may get a wild hair and try on. Looks pretty massive!

I have the shuttle AK31 KT266A mobo and the athlon XP 1800 with the Volcano 6cu heatsink/fan... whoever told you it doesn't fit has no clue what they're doing! I also have the coolermaster ATC200 all-aluminum case which has 4 fans built in. this cools about the same as StaticFingers' results

The Volcano 6 Cu fits, I use one with the same cpu/motherboard combo as you.
I may add that of all recommended heatsinks for that CPU on the AMD site, the Volcano 6 Cu is rated the quietest. [The Volcano 6 Cu+ has a faster fan but produces much more noise.] However, if you do not find it quiet enough, there are other solutions out there, and while they may not be listed on the AMD site, they do work nonetheless. One solution is to replace the 60mm Volcano 6 fan by a 60 to 80mm fan adapter + (of course) an 80mm fan. That displaces the same volume of air per unit of time, with less RPMs (and less noise). Others have simply slowed down their fans (usually by converting their 12v input to 7v, or with a rheostat) while still having a reasonable cpu temperature.
When my case temp is at 25'C, my cpu with the Volcano 6 Cu runs at 43'C. That's under unstressful situations. If it gets more intense as I wear Max Payne's shoes or join a Counter-Strike team, I go up to 54'C with my Radeon 8500.
For good cooling, a holistic approach is necessary: have a good case with a good fan or two blowing the hot air out of the back. I also have frontal fans, but my system's temperature only raises by one or two degrees when I turn them off. Their real advantage is to push "clean" air into the box, since I have a filter in front of them. Without the frontal fans, the air penetrates inside the box from all holes and cracks without filtering.
I will probably not overclock my cpu, as stability and quietness are more important to me. Besides, the 1800+ provides more power than I would have wished for 6 months ago. :)
Ok. Good luck. And use your common sense. If you are planning of changing the fan on your heatsink, you will have to remove the whole block from your cpu, otherwise you could break the latter. I use Artic Silver II thermal compound between my cpu and the heatsink, so it's easy to remove. You may have some sticky stuff in your case, so others will have to help you here on how to remove that safely.

Thermalright SK6. They're usually bundled with either Delta (best, if you're very noise tolerant) or Sunon (slower but quiet) fans.
