Laptop dell 6400 black screen

After i Power on my laptop i get a black screen...no post etc,,,just fan noise and LCD for cap num etc light up for a moment...sometime it also will intermitly deplays for moment and then goes off. . . Tried reseating all connecting on LCD side, plus motherboard side. Tried replaced DIMM to verify memory issue, still same problem.does not look like the back light is not comming on. Tried externel monitor and switching to it from function key...but no joy! ...Does this mean that the video board is gone bad and need to replay?

understand it could be the invertor, LCD, cable, motherboard....but because the external monitor is not waking...am i right in saying this? or is the external swithed of in the BIOS somehow!! Please help!

Hi,

Pause on the 'Power' button

Hold on the 'Power' button for at least 30 seconds, after taking out your system's battery and removing its AC adapter cord.

Reconnect your laptop

Once you hold on the 'Power' button for 30 seconds, reconnect your laptop to the wall power as pausing on the power button drains any static electricity causing the black screen.

Replace the battery

Mostly, a worn out battery causes the black screen of your laptop. You should replace it with a newer one.

Try plugging the laptop into a computer monitor and see if that works... if it does, then you'll have to send in your computer for repair

The star icon (*) means flashing LED, the bold circle means on, the circle within a circle means off.
The LED's that they are referring to are the NUM, CAPS and SCROLL.
It appears that you have a problem with your LCD. Try connecting an external monitor to your laptop. If you get a display then your LCD display panel needs to be replaced. If no display then your motherboard needs to be replaced.

Hi, i have a problem with my Dell Inspirion 6400, after replacing Motherboard laptop won't boot up, after pressing power button, all 3 lights comes up (caps, num and scrl lock) and than back off, power...

I would hook up an external monitor to see if the laptop is working. If it is working fine then you must have a connection problem where the LCD plugs into the motherboard. I am willing to bet it is the LCD cable mot seated correctly. If it does not work on an external monitor try switching the memory chips one at a time if you have 2. Everything you mention indicates it is booting but no video. Good Luck Phil

Dell Inspiro 6400 not starting up

If the Num lock is lit constant, and the Caps Lock and Scroll Lock keys are flashing, the system is reporting a memory error. Power off the system, remove the battery, and follow the user manual from support.dell.com to reseat the memory module(s). If the error persists, you may need to replace the memory and/or the system board of the portable.

Dell Inspiron 6400 Black Screen Problem

Flashing - ON -Flashing indicates a problem with the LCD. Reseat the LCD cable connection to the motherboard, then see if the problem is resolved. If not, disconnect the LCD from the motherboard, and connect and external monitor, see if the system posts normally (You may need to toggle Fn +F8 for external video) if it posts, the LCD/LCD inverter is bad. If it doesn't, the motherboard is bad.
