I have a 4-5 year old 32 inch Sony Trinitron WEGA. While watching any channel, after some irregular period of time, a black rectangle appears on the bottom half of the screen, blocking the picture in that area. If I turn the TV off or change channels, the black patch disappears. Any idea what's going on?

I have same problem, over 10 years old, only started when turned on, but does it @ anytime now . any solutions ? and this thing does weigh a ton. never had a problem ever, great tv, great picture, etc., anytime a function is initiated screen blinks on off at will, stays on for the most part, no other problem, but can this be repaired or is it time to buy a new tv ?
Hi, IK circuit is engaging which basically means the picture tube is getting tired, the only "fix" is temporary (may get another year out of it). You have to increase the "screen control clockwise".
Remove back of set, follow large black or red wire attatched to picture tube down to the flyback transformer, mounted on flyback are two black controls, one is focus (leave it alone) the other is "screen", adjust it clockwise approx. 1/4 inch, remember that this is a high voltage circuit so use one hand in the set the other hand out of the set at all times, any questions ? e-mail me back, good luck, BMW Rider
I had the same issue earlier this week. 4 year old sony trinitron wega 32 in. I was told by Sony to call technician to repair and have called tech....could be anywhere from $200-$300 repair. I did research the blinks (google "sony blinking codes" to find out what each means) Ours was 6-7 blinks which meant power surge to tv. I advised to Sony that i saw many of the same issues with many of the newer tv's and suggested a recall issue--they denied and where no help. I will buy a new tv now--definitly not a Sony.
Hi, tubes getting tired, band-aid fix you can do is remove back of set and turn up(clockwise) the screen control( small black plastic control mounted on side of flyback transformer, do not turn the knob marked focus) until you see a whole bunch of white lines across the screen, then turn same control counter-clockwise until all the lines go away, try several different channels to be sure all the retrace lines are gone, you`ll get up to 1 year more use out of it, than she`s done, good luck, BMW Rider
