Dyson Animal, lost suction and bypass valve seems to be loose

My Dyson Animal will not hardly **** at all.  I suspect it is the bypass valve on the side as it doesn't seem to seat down properly and comes off way to easily.  Please help.

Most suction problems are caused by a clog from picking up something you probably didn't see or if you have pets an accumulation of pet hairs!

To clear it out take a metal coat hanger and unbend it til it's straight, then bend the end and tape it so when you push it through to unclog your vac it doesn't rip the hose.

Push the coat hanger in from the bottom brush area through the opening where the suction is. Also push it in and out anywhere else you can......You'll probably find something clogged....keep working it til it loosens and intermittently turn on the suction.

If you have a second vac with a hose, use that hose for suction on the clogged vac!

This should do it!

No suction when I release the wand

Hi there, it's Jack at Dyson.

If your DC28 doesn't seem to have suction through the hose, it's likely you have a blockage in the hose, wand or airway. To check for this, please follow the steps shown in our online Support guide:

Suction only coming through the wand when its replaced its not switching back to the upright. I have a dyson DC28 animal

Hi there, it's Jack at Dyson.

I'm sorry to hear your DC28 doesn't seem to be working correctly. It sounds as though the change-over valve may be jammed - this diverts the suction to the hose when you remove the wand, and back to the cleaner head when you replace the wand on your machine.

You may find a blockage is jamming the valve - you can check for this using our online Support guide:

If you can't find any obstructions, please get in touch with us directly as we'd appreciate the opportunity to provide further assistance. If you email us at, we'll be in touch as soon as possible.

A Dyson dc 17 Animal and the wand/hose has lost suction

Hi its Darran at Dyson.

From your description of the problem, it sounds as though the wand/hose is blocked. To check this, remove the wand/hose assembly from the machine, switch it on and test the suction from the top of the wand with your hand. If the suction is poor, remove the wand from the hose and test the suction from the top of the hose. If its good here, then you know that the wand handle is blocked.

My Dyson DC14 ANimal vacum cleaner has lost a lot of its suction, i have cleaned the regular filter but this does not seem to have improved it much. JAmie

Hi its Darran at Dyson.

A loss of suction is most likely caused by a blockage or a dirty filter. If you have cleaned the filter, it would be worth checking the machine through for a blockage by following the user guide or the diagnostics in the Support section on our website at

If you are still having difficulties with your Dyson, please contact our Helpline on 0800 298 0298 (UK) or 1866MYDYSON (US).

Hose seems to have to much suction on animal dyson

Most hoses will have a rotary device near the business end which allows air to escape or bypass the suction end. Look for this and rotate or slide it back
