Question about Sears Craftsman LiftMaster Chamberlain Garage Door Opener Wireless Keypad Model 976LM Security+

1 Answer

Garage Door opener doesn't operate.

Motor "clicks" when switch is hit like it's trying to run, but no movement of the trolley. Acts like it's bound. The opener did the same thing once before so I was operating the door manually. Then one day after sweeping the garage floor, I tried it...on a whim... and it worked. I thought maybe the broom has hit the electric eye sensors and rectified the situation. This lasted for two opening/closing cycles. Now doesn't operate. Can I jumper out the electric eyes to eliminate that as the cause? I guess next I'll check the gears that others are saying they found to be stripped. Any other suggestions...other than buy a new unit, thank you.

Let me try this again. I accidentally posted this answer on the wrong thread.

Does it simply click then hum? or does it sound like something's moving inside? if you can hear movement inside I'd guess stripped gears. if it just hums I'd have to agree that the chain is bound somewhere. Either way it doesn't sound like it's the electric eyes to me. You should be able to bypass them if you still want to but you have to know if your model uses NO or NC contacts first.

You said you adjusted the up limit already. Is it adjusted as far as possible? Usually the screw will become harder to turn. You mention a new door and spring but is the opener the same? My guess is you have a new opener as well and it is out of sync with the trolley. Try turning the up limit back and see if the trolley will stop shorter. If it does, loosen the chain or belt so that you can remove if from the opener's drive gear. Bring the trolley to your stop limit and put the chain/belt back on the gear. Adjust the chain/gear tension and try door operation again. If it was a sync problem, the door should close closer to your limit. Adjust up and down travel as necessary to fine tune it. This worked for me so good luck.

Craftsman 1/2 hp garage door opener motor just buzzes when the remote is pushed no movement

Check to see if the trolley is jammed against the bolt just in front of the motor unit. If so loosen the chain enough to remove the tension of the trolley. Now run the motor until the door closes. While the door is closed, locate the 'up limit' control on the side of the motor unit. Turn this control 2 full turns in the opposite direction of the arrow printed on the cover. Tighten the chain.

My 1/3 hp craftsmen door opener just hums when you hit the wall button or remotes in the car. I replaced the starter motor capacitor and nothing changed any ideas?

Is the door stuck in the open position? If so the trolley is probably jammed against the bolt just in front of the motor unit. Loosen the chain until the tension is removed from the trolley. Run the motor until the door is closed. While the door is closed locate the 'up limit' adjustment on the side of the motor unit and turn this 2 complete turns in the opposite direction of the arrow printed on the cover. Tighten the chain.

If the door is in the open position the trolley is most likely jammed against the bolt just in front of the motor unit. Loosen the chain until the pressure is off the trolley and then run the motor until the door is closed. While the door is closed locate the 'up force' control on the side of the motor unit and turn this control 2 complete turns in the opposite direction of the arrow printed on the cover. Tighten the chain.

Loosen the chain to remove the strain from it and run the motor until the door closes. While the door is closed locate the 'up limit' on the side of the motor unit and turn this control 2 complete turns in the opposite direction of the arrow printed on the cover. Now you can tighten the chain.

Is the door stuck in the open position? If so the trolley is probably jammed against the bolt just in front of the motor unit. Loosen the chain enough to free the trolley and then run the opener until the door is closed. While the door is closed locate the 'up limit' on the side of the motor unit and turn this control 2 complete turns in the opposite direction of the arrow printed on the cover. Tighten the chain.

Craftsman garage door opener 1/2 hp will not open door

It sounds like your chain is out of sync with the limit switches. Loosen the chain enough so that you can remove it from the sprocket on top of the motor unit. Now run the opener until the sprocket runs counterclockwise and stops. Now with everything attached and the door in the open position replace and tighten the chain. You are now in sync. You may need to tweak the up and down limit controls which are on the side of the motor unit.

My Liftmaster garage opener won't go up, only down. It's not bound mechanically. I just replaced the shaft assembly because the old one broke. But since I've done that the garage only goes down, it won't...

BE SURE YOU HAVE THE CHAIN/BELT INSTALLED PROPERLY.
IF THE DRIVE IS AT OR NEAR THE UP LIMIT SWITCH THE DOOR CAN'T GO UP.
LOOSEN & REMOVE THE CHAIN/BELT.
TRY RUNNING THE OPENER TO BOTH LIMITS - JUST TO SEE IF IT WORKS.
RUN THE OPENER TO THE DOWN LIMIT.
MOVE THE TROLLEY TO THE CLOSED POSITION - RECONNECT CHAIN/BELT.
HOPE THIS HELPS

How is the chain supposed to be aligned

sync the motor. the gear kit tells you how. get motor up and position trolley near motor, assuming you left chain/cable attached to trolley). Get motor up by running motor and then pushing button again. if motor reverse, let it run and it will stop in up position.
