Converting from a 4-prong back to a 3-prong is located under the Additional Notes section of the link I provided.

Performing any kind of electrical maintenance (i.e., installing electrical outlets) should only be accomplished by a certified electrician. The easier option, and probablt least expensive, would be to replace the power cord. The average price is $10-$15.

FYI: To clarify, here's the difference between between the two types of power cords:

    1. 4-prong - does NOT use a double ground. There are two HOT leads, a NEUTRAL and a single GROUND.

    2. 3-prong - has two HOT leads and a NEUTRAL (which gets grounded to the equipment chassis).

You need to get a 3 prong outlet. 3wires on the dryer means 3 prong outlet. FYI 4 prong outlets and cords is for a double grond. Change your outlet to the 3 prong and your on your way Good Luck

I have a 4 prong tanning bed 220v and my appliance outlet at home only accepts the 3 prong plus such as the ones you see on a dryer. How can i get this converted to a 3 prong so that i can plug it in? Or...

It is because you tanning bed requires L1 and L2 (240V) and a seperate neutral, and a ground. You need an electrician to install a proper outlet. A dryer (years ago) was installed without a neautral. However per NEC electrical code even new dryers have to have 4 wires. Do not attempt to use on 3 wires !

I would like to change the electrical plug on my dryer

The outlet or the cord? You can purchase 3 or 4 prong cords at any Home improvement store. There is usually an extra screw at the terminal block for just that.

I need to go from a 4 prong to a 3 prong plug. do I go black to black, white to white, ground?

A 3 prong will be : left to red , center to white , and right to black . Doesn't matter which is left or right , as long as the center goes to white . There is no green on a 3 prong cord , only 4 .

We have a kenmore 70 series electric dryer, and we have a three prong receptacle, but the plug is 4 prong. What type of adapter do we need?

According to the National Electrical Code, as of 2000 all newer homes are required to have a 4-prong receptacle for all 220VAC appliances. However, if your home already had a pre-existing 3 prong outlet, you shouldn't have to upgrade to a 4 prong. The following link explains:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r793520-3_prong_4_prong_power_cord_conversion

The main difference is how the neutral (WHITE) and green (GROUND) wires are termnated. In a 4 wire configuration, the neutral and ground are independent of each other. In a 3 wire configuration these two wires are terminated together. The instructions to convert a 4-prong appliance to a 3-prong are at the bottom of the page in the link I provided.

NOTE: If this is a new dryer, keep in mind, some REQUIRE a 4-prong plug even if you have a pre-existing 3 prong outlet. Read through your installation instructions that came with the appliance if in doubt. If this is the case, you will need to have a 4 wire outlet installed by a certified electrician.

If you have questions, please let me know. I hope this helps you.

New house requires 4 prong plug for dryer...mine has 3...bought new cord...How to wire it?

The old three prong, the vertical prong is neutral (white wire), the two slanted are 220 volts. The new plug, the extra prong is ground (bare wire). Shut off the outlet at the breaker panel, and remove the outlet to examine the wiring to it. It should be as above--the 220 volt wires are red and black or black and black. The ground wire is bare or green insulated. Inside the dryer case, tie the green and white wires to the dryer case, and tie the two outside wires where they went with the old cord. Check with an electrician if you are unsure about this.

Hello, I have a Kenmore 80 Series. Washer and Dryer. Bought it from someone on Craigslist. How do I hook them up? Is there a manual any where out there?

Connect your hot and cold water pipes to the washer. Place the drain pipe into a sink or direct drain feed to your sewer system. Plug it into outlet. Dryer - plug it into your 220 line outlet. If the plug is not the same as your outlet you can find instructions on lline with pics on how to change a 3 prong plug to a 4 prong plug and so on...:)

If your dryer came with a 4-prong plug, do not change it. For the very reasons you quoted with the article, you may screw up the 110v accessories required of your appliance (like the clock or digital display). It is best to change the household outlet to a 4-prong type. Just make sure your wiring is correct. You will need a neutral on the 4th leg, which means you will probably have to run new wiring from the outlet to the distribution panel.
