Question about HP Compaq Presario V2000 Notebook

1 Answer

My Compaq Presario V2000 will not start.

Yesterday when I left for work, someone decided to try watching a movie on my computer. The computer crashed on them, which actually happens frequently, but this time was different.

When I tried to start it up, I went up to safe mode, let it run through its setup. Here's where things went wrong, after it finished it didn't just crash again. It restarted again and went straight to the startup select screen, I tried each of the startups (Safe Mode, Safe Mode w/ Networking, Safe Mode w/ Command, Last Known Good Configuration, Start Windows Normally) with no good outcome.

I have no idea what is going on, please help!

Would the video driver really keep my computer from starting up entirely?

At the startup selection screen it reads this exactly.

"We apologize for the inconvenience, but Windows did not start successfully. A recent hardware or software change might have caused this."
"If your computer stopped responding, restarted unexpectedly, or was automatically shut down to protect your files and folders, choose Last Known Good Configuration to revert to the most recent settings that worked."
"If a previous startup attempt was interrupted due to a power failure or because the Power or Reset button was pressed, or if you aren't sure what caused the problem, choose Start Windows Normally."

Then there are five start up choices.

    "Safe Mode"
    "Safe Mode with Networking"
    "Safe Mode with Command Prompt"
"Last Known Good Configuration (your most recent settings that worked)"
    and
    "Start Windows Normally"

I've tried going into PhoenixBIOs and finding the problem there, nothing worked.

Maybe it's time for a new computer?

It sounds like the video driver crashed from "special content" on the DVD. You can try reinstalling the video driver.

Or, can you clarify what displays at the startup selection screen?

Ok, this makes sense. If this was a legit dvd, then it most likely had extra content on it (like wallpaper, sounds, etc) that installed something that crashed a driver.  If it wasn't legit, then the "player" that was used to play the movie installed something that crashed a driver.
If you can. I would reinstall some drivers to start.  Have you tried the "Last known good configuration" option?
Then if reinstalling drivers doesn't work, I would just restore the Windows OS.  But remember to BACKUP YOUR FILES.....once you restore it will be erased.
That compaq is a good machine unless you really want another PC this is fixable.

I have compaq presario v2000 imtrying to watch amovie with the windows media player,i only get sound and no picture

Hello

OK, this problem can occur due to a codex. I would suggest that you try downloading Media player classic, i use it, and it plays pretty much all the video and audio formats.

Click HERE to navigate to the download page.

After the download is complete, install the software, then, open the movie with the software you installed.

Let em know if it works.

Kind regards
Andrea

Computer shuts down

Your computer is most likely overheating.

Make sure it is positioned so that none of the vents are blocked on the unit.
Check it with your hand to see if it's overheating, make sure dust is not blocking the vents.
If the issue persists, could be software or a failed cooling system on the unit.

Unmounable boot volume

This is an operating system error, and you will need an operating system disc. You can try to repair or reinstall the operating system, but most likely the hard drive has failed and will need replacing.

Try uninstalling the RAM memory for a minute or two and start the machine with no memory, then reinstall the memory and start again, it should boot right up.
