Question about Samsung (SHM522CBEWN) CD-RW/DVD-ROM Combo Drive
Hello, for a while now i've been trying to back up some home movies onto dvd, using 8gig dvd-r discs. (xp pro,sp3)
the movies are in divx format for max utilisation of space.
the drive is a tsstcorp sh-s202n, and i have never managed to burn a dual layer disk that my pc (or anything else i've tried to play it in) can read.
i've used roxio and nero, and although i can burn 4.7g and 80min cdrs with no probs; and even though both programs tell me the burn is successful, when i go to check that the DL disc plays (in any media player) the playback is fine for a while then goes jerky before coming to a halt.
i got nero to verify the data after the last burn, and it threw up lots of read errors.
now i can understand if my drive my be faulty and doesn't read the second layer, but other pcs wont read it either, despite the copy being successful.
i heard somewhere that most drives wont read movies burnt on the 2nd layer of -r DLdvds- is this correct? if so what is the point of making them!!
if thats bunk then why cant i read them?

Check the jumpers on the back of the drive to ensure you have no conflicts. There are 3 settings M, S, CS which mean master, slave and cable select.
Cable select requires a special cable in your computer with fine pitch 80 wires, usually with one blue connector at the motherboard, one black for the master drive and one grey for the slave. This colour code is not used by all computer manufacturers, though and they may all just be grey.
If you have this cable, make sure the jumper on your drives is set to CS. Otherwise, on each cable (there should be 2 in your computer and the hard drive should definately be master on one) you can have only one master device and one slave.
