The MF7420 has paper jams where the paper feeds from the paper holder upwards to the drum/***** unit. When the paper tray is pulled forward there is one sheet of paper slightly inserted to the drum/toner area. I would guess less than 1/2 inch. When I lower the door to access the drum/toner the sheet of paper can't be seen sticking through. I've cleaned the paper handlers on the paper tray and the two black rubber wheels the paper passes by en route to th drum/toner. The problem is worse when 50-75 sheets are in the tray - when it's over 100 it only james half the time. Never had this problem when it was new.

check the wheels that pick it from the tray. If they feel smooth, try to put some tape on them and rip it back off. This cleans the wheels. Also try a new pack of paper and check if it\'s set to plain paper and not to heavier or coated paper

I have had paper jams in five different places on this machine. It has jammed at the pickup point from the tray, in which case you have to remove the paper tray and pull the jammed paper out. It has jammed at the manual paper feed tray, in which case you just have to pull the jammed paper out of the feed rollers. It has jammed at the toner/drum, in which case you have to open the front cover and pull the toner cartridge out to remove the jam. It has jammed in the back of the machine where the paper feeds through to the output tray, in which case you have to open the small back panel and remove the paper. And it has jammed in the output rollers, in which case you have to reach inside the output tray and remove the paper. Then once the jam is cleared there are times when the machine has to be unplugged for up to 8 hours to reset before it will function properly.
Using a cloth damp with water clean the feed roller. You will see it when you pull out the paper tray. If it starts feeding good it was a feeding prob.. If it keeps doing it look at the leading edge of the jammed paper for any signs of dings or bends. if you find any paper damage look in that area for what is causing the damage.

if there is paper in the tray..and paper won't feed up after you press print, that mean paper is jam... but for this model, you have to make sure the drum unit is clean as dirty drum unit will cause paper not able to feed,.. suggest clean up the internal part of the printer and test again.. use a slightly wet cloth to clean the feed roller.. too much dust will cause it not to feed properly.
Clear the jammed paper as follows. Observe Cautions signs in printer.
Always remove all paper from the paper tray and straighten the stack when you add new paper. This helps prevent multiple sheets of paper from feeding through the printer at one time and prevents paper jams. 1.Press the cover release button and then open the front cover. 2.Slowly take out the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly. The jammed paper will be pulled out with the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly. 3.Pull the paper tray completely out of the printer. 4.Close the front cover. 5.Pull the jammed paper up and out of the printer. 6.Open the front cover again. 7.Open the back cover. 8.Pull the tabs at the left and right hand sides toward you to open the fuser cover (1). 9.Using both hands, gently pull the jammed paper out of the fuser unit. 10.Close the back cover. 11.Pull the duplex tray completely out of the printer. 12.Pull the the jammed paper out of the printer or the duplex tray. Put the duplex tray back in the printer. 13.Push down the blue lock lever and take the toner cartridge out of the drum unit. Clear the jammed paper if there is any inside the drum unit. 14.Put the toner cartridge back into the drum unit until you hear it lock into place. If you put the cartridge in properly, the blue lock lever will lift automatically. 15.Put the drum unit and toner cartridge assembly back in the printer. 16.Put the paper tray firmly back in the printer. 17.Close the front cover. 18.Make sure that the Paper LED is now off and the printer is ready.
After clearing paper jam if noise persist printer may need a Repair Tech and parts replacement for broken or wore parts.
Theo, remove the drum and paper tray. Disconnect the power source. Carefully reach under paper tray and tray to pull paper out. Sometimes depending upon the unit, you may find a flap inside the drum area, that lifts up.
If you cannot remove the paper jamming unit, you may want to find a plastic folder, which you will need to cut the same size as the paper you are using.
Feed this in buy hand trying to free up the lodged paper.
Most of the time, its a small piece stuck in the left corner.
Have you tried cleaning the paper feed roller(s)? Either soap & water OR isopropyl alchohol with a cotton ball will do, just make sure the rollers are dry before trying to print again, otherwise damage to imaging unit (drum/toner unit) could occurr. If the printer doesn't feed in the first place, the printer thinks it has a jammed paper, thus opening paper tray and front cover resets misfeed/ jam condition. Let me know your progress....Tim
After changing the drum, toner and running around town for days trying to find a reliable place to get this printer repaired, I realized I was spending a lot more money than what the printer actually costs. the drum was over $100, toner was $80, and the printer is $250. I bought a new one, and I can now use the old one for parts.
More than likely you have bad feed tires in the tray you're pulling from or if the drum unit is stuck there probably is paper jammed up in the unit. Replace you feed tires and check your drum separation claws when you are able to get the drum unit out.
